just recieved my new mcmillan edge for my sako 85 7mm-08. it looks great. its at the gunsmith getting bedded and getting the rings lapped.

im wondering if i should get the action skelotonized the bolt fluted. my gunsmith advised me if i get this done i should get the action trued at the same time. any thoughts. im thinking why not. right now with a leupold vx3 3.5-10x40 and leupold ring mounts the gun weights just over 7lbs.

That's a fine looking rifle. I'd probably just leave it alone and live with 7lb's - that's a pretty reasonable weight already, but then again I've never sheep hunted.

As a Sako collector, I advise against having the "action skelotonized, the bolt fluted".
It will significantly reduce the long-term value of the firearm.

Instead .. if you really need to trim off a couple of ounces, consider a lighter weight scope.
For example .. your VX3 weighs 12.6 oz, whereas a VX2 Ultralight 3-9x33 weighs only 9.3 oz

Don't waste any money truing that action... it's a factory barrel and a hunting rifle in a hunting caliber...

^^ This ^^ .... A VX2 2x7 or FXII 4x would be a good choice as well.

Spending extra $$ on an Edge and then adding a heavier x50mm scope doesn't make sense.

Skeletonizing and fluting are pretty much cosmetic, don't expect to notice a difference in weight. If you like the look, go ahead with it, but it's an expensive facelift. As for scopes, that depends on the type of hunting you plan to do. If your hunting involves times of dim light (early morning, late evening) then the 50mm objective will be advantageous, although I doubt you'd notice much difference between a 40mm and 50mm Leupold VX3. However, drop to a scope with a 32mm objective and you'll definitely notice.

If you need to shed a few ounces, take a dump before heading out. :D

I also ordered the edge in the new McMillian Hunter configuration back in January, and they said it would be six months. I'm having a 300 WM built. McMillian Stock, Rem 700 action, Gaillard #2 barrel fluted, Talley rings, and the cherry on top is Leica ER 3.5-14x42
