I just picked up a Savage 111 in 338 win mag and the barrel was cut and crowned at 20", so what would be the farthest you would shoot a moose, I am thinking it's still a 400yd gun all day long which is farther than I can shoot lol

If that is "farther than you can shoot" it is not a 400 yard gun. You will have to get to the range and test some loads and see what "you" can do with it.

You won't loose that much velocity. Assuming shooting 225gr and even if you lost 150 fps you would still have over 2100 ft-lbs of energy at 400yards. The rifle has plenty of capability if the load is accurate and the shooter is up to the task.

no ... I am saying I can't kill a moose at 400yds

The gun does not operate independent of the shooter... if you say that you can't shoot 400 yards, then neither can your gun... sounds like you have some range time to put in to achieve your goal.

Good news; range time is fun.

Just stalk 4" closer and you're good to go. The rifle has the capability to kill a moose at 400 yards. You don't and, unlike most, you know and admit it. If you want to then it will require range time. If you don't then you still require range time to maintain your level of proficiency. Shooting is a perishable skill.

One thing about those short barrelled magnums is they buck like heck when you light 'em up with those big bullets!!
it may be difficult to shoot well At the longer distances .

Those New Brunswick moose are small. The biggest one I ever shot there was about 600 pounds.

About the longest shot I could have taken (if a moose had walked out into the clearing) was about 250 yards. That is the limit of my ability to estimate distance - so that becomes the limiting factor.

Since a 303 or 308 is plenty of rifle in NB, I would say you are good to go.

I moose hunt. I've shot quite a few moose. 338 is more then enough gun to get the job done. I wouldn't worry too much about distance. lol the moose I've shot have been under 200 yards and as close as 50 yards. When such a large animal is out past 200 yards you generally have time to make an educated desicion of weather or not you should stalk in closer or call him in closer. Get a range finder..... Use it. Hunt smart and you will always be successful.

You're right, they are small moose here and most are shot at short distance.

I've shot 2 with a 375Magnum and another with a 35Whelen. All would have died just the same with a 308.
