Hi there everyone!

Firstly I must thank so many of you for offering you generous advice concerning corrosive ammo. You all really eliminated my apprehension concerning the use of the stuff, and gave me such great tips of cleaning procedure and ammo to generally avoid.
I'm really looking forward to getting a crate of ammo and enjoying this thing.

Secondly, thanks to all of you who gave me suggestions on the bent bolt query I had, however:

I've decided to leave this rifle alone, as it is after all a Finn, and I just find it so pretty as it is :)

The scope that I got with the rifle is the SVD scope, and I must admit I've always been a bit obsessed with the SVD, so perhaps I'll make/get an SKS SVD imitation or some such project.

Finally, I took several pics of the mosin , and was hoping some of you wise men can tell me a bit about it.

I apologize in advance for the grain in the pictures, I took them with my camcorder and it doesn't take very good stills. but they're alright..

I also should mention how awesome this thing is.. I love how long it is. it's like handling a musket.

pics: (dial up beware!)

P.s. no that isn't rust, it's cosmoline

There we go,
thanks again everyone!

What it is is a nice looking Mosin Nagant that will be a mediocre shooter at best until it is tweaked and fitted with a decent scope.

Should you scope it or should you not ? Ask yourself that if you were a soldier and were offered the choice, which one would you go for ? The mediocre shooter or the precision rifle ? Everyone knows the answer.

How much damage did it do to the wallet ?

My M44 is in pieces at my feet as I type this, the action will be bedded and the barrel fully floated this afternoon.

Well,
let's just say I'm a traditionalist and leave it at that.

I'll get a Tula or Izhivsk and scope that.

the rifle itself was.... 260 i think?
it was a combined sale so I don't remember exactly.
something like that I believe.

dont pay any attention to spencer ^

what you have is a beautiful m91 (not a 91/30) with gorgeous wood and an interesting history and it will only go up in value. It was a good idea to leave it alone...

Oh yea, and Im sure it will be more then a mediocre shooter, finns always are ;)

Editted cause I'm an idiot. Its a Finn M/91. The AZF mark means it was an Austrian capture, probably later sold to the Finns in the 20s. The B on the barrel means the barrel was made in Belgium.

OH!
i forgot to ask,
how do you remove the bolt?
I wanna clean this thing up and oil and so on..

I assume you rotate the little tab while it's at a certain position but I can't seem to figure it out!

thanks!

So it's made in finland, then captured in Austria, then sold back to finn?

oh and whats the superficial difference between m91 and m91/30?

also, what's the tag that's on the sling mount?

Just hold down the trigger and pull the bolt back, it'll come right out.

It was made in Russia like all Finn Mosins, they actually never made receivers. The Austrians captured it, sold it to the Finns, who remade it to the point where its essentially a new rifle.

The M91 is longer than the M91/30 and has the somewhat "humped" handguard. An M91/30s looks alot straighter. It also has a leaf rather than tangent sight, and no front sight protector. Russian M91s had the rear sight graduated in Arshins, but the Finn ones have them regraduated to meters.

The tag is a Finn arsenal tag - unfortunately it looks like the part with any info is torn off. They're uncommon, but not unheard of.

awesome.
thanks so much for the info.

Oh, I noticed too that the m91/30 has that slot sling mount in the stock instead of this m91 which has the external type..

really neat.

I can't get over how long this thing is.. it's 51 inches!!
so neaaat

Actually, that was one of the Finn modifications to the M91. Russian M91s have the slots. Finn M91/30s also have the hangars vs Russian ones with the slots.

Oh I see. that's interesting.
somehow I feel that hangers make more sense...more modular and clean..

slots are... annoying..
(but then again, the M1 Carbine's system is soooo annoying hahah)

I kinda like the slots myself, just cause they're different. I'll agree 100% about the M1 Carbine, the whole sling / oiler thing is a complete PITA (not that I don't love my M1).

The hightst scoring Finnish sniper (200+ russians) used exactly the same rifle. (no scope)
If thats mediocre shooting I don't know what accurate shooting would be.;)

John Sukey

I can hit a man sized target at 350 yds every time with my 45/70 rolling block, but it is not what I would describe as an accurate rifle.

He has not even shot it yet, but when he has and the novelty wears off it will gather dust unless he makes it into an accurate shooter.

yeah you're right..
I hate guns..

unless I can hit a dime off a baby's head from the top of an apartment, what's the point of owning a piece of history...

guns are so incredibly boring..

...

I don't understand, spencer..
you're in a Military Surplus section of these forums..

if all you care about in a firearm is accuracy, then why the hell do you care about Milsurps at all?

just go buy a bunch of modern sniper rifles and sell your milsurps to someone else before you attach lasers and scopes to your M1 Garand..

Yeah, really. There's a Precision Rifles forum 3 links up. Its one thing to have different priorities about your rifles but theres no call to get insulting just because someone doesn't want to do with their rifle what you would.
