So I decided it was time for a new 6mm rifle. I already have a 6XC which shoots pretty well. But the fricken cost for brass is almost $2/case. I'd hate to lose any in some of the matches I want to shoot so I figured something with cheaper and easier brass. So I did a little snooping around over at the accurateshooter forums and decided I was going with a caliber called 6 Competition Match. Its a .243 with a few changes to the shoulder and neck. Its capable of launching the 115 class bullets at 3200fps and the 105 class at well over that with no pressure issues. Personally I want to send the 105 hybrids at between 3150-3200 fps. The chosen powder is H1000. Yes it's a slower powder but the idea is slower burning helps keep the throat from eroding quickly. I guess the theory is some of the powder burns further down the barrel. At any rate some guys are getting 3000-4000 rds of accurate life out of it(we shall see) when a strict cleaning regimen is followed.
I got a reamer and a kreiger barrel and decided that since I love PGW rifles I wanted to build it on a coyote action. Got a hold of the boys there and they said no worries. Shipped off the reamer and barrel and soon enough it was in my hands.
Time to fireform some brass. I didn't want to burn up my hybrids making brass So I bought some Nosler custom competitions and powder up 47 yrs of H1000 and away I went. Break in a rifle with shooting and cleaning isn't my bag nor does PGW recommend it So to work I went. Keep in mind this is fireforming with zero load development.
Not bad considering zero load development and fireforming.
So once the fireforming is done I get to load development. 49 yrs of H1000 should get me close to the zone. Turns out 49.5 is the ticket. So far I have 200 rds down the pipe. The Krieger should just be starting to get good now as I've always found they take 200ish rds to settle in. Now for a little seating depth test. 105 hybrids for this test.
Turns out pretty fricken good. The only group over 1/2" at 100m is the first one top left and that was on a clean bore that had been freshly JB'd(part of the cleaning process). To say I was happy was a bit of an understatement. Turns out just on the lands was the ticket and it's repeatable. Sweet. Now to load a few to make sure it will shoot well past 100m. So I take it to 200m and 300m. Wind is gusty this day and the temp on the range is in the 30s. Mirage at 2 and 300 is pretty bad. Still I get a few of these.
So to say I'm impressed by this rifle is a bit of an understatement. I'll be shooting it in Ottawa at NSCC and will be looking to find that top spot. Mega thanks to Ross and Steve at Prairie Gun Works! Such a beautiful piece of kit!
