My new (to me) 1976 Browning Citori, 30" barrels with fixed full/mod chokes. Stock is super short but that works for me oddly enough - the gun feels natural and I don't have to stretch or crawl the stock to get into the right position. Still in great shape for it's age, the stock has some dings and could use a good cleaning. Bores look good, and the action is still tight. Just gave it a quick cleaning, but the checkering is still dirty - anyone have any tips on what to do there?

Can't wait to go shoot it on Tuesday at my local club's trap night!

Just use a medium stiff plastic brush, dry. You don't want to round off the points.

Thanks! I'll try that - you don't recommend soapy warm water?

That's a pre-Type 1, more of a Miroku than a Citori. Make sure all the critical areas are greased.

Yeah, it's a pre-Type 1 gun, so I am a little worried about parts but it was in pretty good shape so I am hoping that it will at least serve me for the next few years. What are the critical areas beyond the usual (extractors, hinges/lugs, trigger, release lever)?

Grease in the locking recess at the bottom of the barrel block, and on the hinge pin. Oil on all the other parts. I have a very good condition pre-Type 1 skeet gun that I have used on and off for years - no problems at all. I also have a Miroku Superior skeet gun of more recent vintage, which is more like the Citori...

What kind of grease should I use? I just used Outers gun oil after cleaning the gun thoroughly with some Hoppe's 9 and Q-tips, is that OK?

I had one like that but in not so good shape used it for years and sold it

you should be able to use that --way past the time the blueing wears off
use grease on the hinge pins

I took the springs/ pins out of mine --so it would only extrac the hulls -- not shoot them over your shoulder (or in your face)
so you never have pick your hulls off the ground

Very nice condition for a 41 year old gun!! Congratulations, that is a beauty! As for greasing hinges etc. most manufacturers recommend a light film of oil as grease holds dust and burned powder residues etc. which can do more harm than good. I have a 101 that has at least 50,000 rds through it and only ever had a light spray of Rem Oil with any excess wiped off and the gun shows almost no usage marks in the critical areas. I have had it 28 years and it will outlast me. Don't fret and worry about using it, wearing it out or sourcing parts, just enjoy your new to you gun!!

I see your in Vancouver, go see the guys on Fraser St. If your close or the Italians or No Sale Sports err I mean wholesale sports or Cabelas for all your greased needs.
Hell maybe some pork fat will do and you'll be doubled Good for the zombie attack or the Isis attack...they hate pork fat I hear.
Seriously, go buy some light grease from any of the many sporting goods stores in your area and call it good.
Nice gun by the way, keep us up to score on how she shoots.

Contaminants will adhere to grease or oil; you have to keep the surfaces clean and and maintain fresh grease/oil as soon as necessary to avoid premature wear.

When two metal surfaces have friction you will get better lubrication with grease.

FWIW - My low mileage pre-type 1 showed signs of galling on the hinge pin when I got it - and there was substantial effort required to break the gun. There was a noticeable amount of difference in the effort required to open the gun when using gun oil vs grease on the pin. So its been grease for me ever since, on the critical areas. I generally lube my guns once or twice a year, likely every 500 rounds or so. I use a hobbyist paint brush from the dollar store, and paint a thin layer of grease on the desired surface - that's all that's needed, too much could be problematic.

You should have just stopped right there. The Fraser Street Boys are the best stop in town!

Sorry guys, I got the shotgun, went shooting, went traveling, went to a bachelor's party trip and then got busy! I haven't checked the thread in a while and didn't realize there were so many replies!

Actually - that's where I got the shotgun! Bought it from Shane at Reliable, he gave me a quick rundown on the gun and I'll definitely go back to Reliable for my ammo and cleaning needs. Been out with it twice and I think I'm getting used to the sighting with the gun - had to adjust my cheek/face position to avoid getting slapped by the stock a bit, and she definitely lets me know if I'm cheating on my stance/grip. May look into a different recoil pad in the future.
Looks real nice. No b.s. Engravings
Thank you! She's plain but that's beauty on all it's own.

I will look for some and give it a try. Thanks! I have been cleaning it off and then applying fresh oil after I go out and shoot.
Here is my pre type 1 - no BS markings!
Ah, I can't quite see the picture, I don't think Google Photos lets you hotlink - I wish I could see it. Could you re-host it on Imgur or another host so we can see it?

They definitely know their stuff, and are a friendly bunch. I wish they had better hours though as it is hard to make it out during the week. Also, too bad that W stopped working there. I liked visiting there more. :p
But, but , those engravings make it more lighter so as to swing faster and shoot more lead by the end of the day....
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

How's she shooting and what grease you buy?

I haven't bought grease yet (oops!) as I have been a bit busy (but I have been lubricating every time before I go out with Triflo and cleaning it off after!). I've been out twice, and so far she's been great! Swings beautifully, action works wonderfully tight, shoots without a fault every time with a pretty smooth trigger! Any issues are with the Indian, not the arrow. Also, I have to get used to catching the spent shells, or change the ejectors to extractors.

This past Tuesday was my best night out yet - shot 2 rounds of 20/25 (my best consecutive rounds)! Even did a 11 out from the 27-yard line which considering it was my first time that far out, using pink Fed Top Gun 1 1/8oz 8's at 1145fps (yes it's slow), was pretty good! I also won the game of pieces at the end which was my first time winning, without even being super conservative when shooting. The "good shooting" compliments from the more experienced members of the club were the icing on the cake for me.

Safe to say, had a very good time and loving the Citori.

Just a short update...

Gun is doing good, and I'm getting to know her a lot better. Managed to shoot my first 23/25 today, but did 20/25 the next round. Still! My best ever round yet. Settled in on using Remington Gun Club 1oz #8 2 3/4 dr (1185 fps) as a favoured load - works well, soft shooting, seems to be cleaner than Federal Top Gun or Winchester Super Target and is relatively cheap. Looking to find Ballistol or G96 to use as solvent/cleaner instead of the Outers stuff that came with my basic cleaning kit, as the Outers solvent smells quite a bit. My other option is Hoppe's No 9 which is also fairly smelly.

roastpuff, thanks for sharing the purchase and the range trips with us.
From the looks of the red recoil pad I would say she is a few years old and kinda hard.
Find a nice soft cushy one and your shoulder will thank you for it too.
Best Regards,
Rob
