I bought a mosin off the EE and I love it. Originally I bought it thinking of it more for a parts rifle.. Then when it came in the mail, I was treated to one of the best looking mosin bores I've seen. shiny, bright perfect rifling. It also came with a splendid bent bolt.

The only thing I've noticed is the stock is painted. It's not shellac. It's not varnish. It's paint.

I'm not complaining at all* about the rifle. Just want to know if someone else has run into a painted stock? I don't *think* this was factory practice..

I'd love to post pics but I can't. Anyone else run into a painted stock?

stocks get painted all the time by owners to try to change to look, i've had a few come through the door at my place like that, i usally just replace the stock or resell it myself.
If it looks good and your happy with it that way keep it, if not its not that hard to refinish a stock (saying that i just did my first refinish just recently )

Yeah I figured. I'm going to refinish it I think! I can also see some writing on the stock. Can't quite make it out - but it's fairly big. I'm going to take it to the range and test her out

Just make sure when you go to refinish it, that you use stripper to get the paint off. Don't sand it, or you'll lose the writing that you've seen under the paint. Sanding is a bad idea.

One of my favorite looks on a rifle i sto take circa furniture stripper and get it down to bare wood... then apply coat after coat of linsee oil to it.... turns out a really really nice grain....

I like an oiled stock over anything else. I just like the lack of shine and how it brings out the wood grain.

For a shiny finish, like when I refinished my fancy hunting rifle, I used something similar to shelac (Tru-oil) and it's really nice. I think the technique is similar to what I have heard called "french polish" and it is smooth as glass, brings out the grain in the wood, and is quite durable.

As soon as I have the internet I'll post pics of my new mosin(s) ;) AND my svt-40!

Artyman: it appears it was painted with a brush - as I can see the areas he/she touched screws with and such..

I'll post up some pics in about a week and bump this thread..
