My new (to me) XCR-L: Reloads and performance so far.

So, after my ordeal with my CSA vz58 5.56 I opted for a different NR black rifle. After selling a few items that had been sitting unused for quite some time, I finally had enough cash on hand to afford a keymod XCR-L 5.56 with light weight barrel. So far, I have to say I'm pleased with the performance. If the rifle proves to be reliable I think I will settle on the XCR-L as the black rifle in my stable and may order a conversion so I can take it out to hunt deer/black bear.

Accuracy

After a bit of reloading, I have to say I am happy with the accuracy so far. With a load of 26.0gr of W748 underneath a 69gr SMK I was able to get a group of just under 1.5" @ approx. 110-120 yards. I thought the trigger was good for a stock unit given the type of rifle it's in - definitely better than a stock AR15 trigger in my opinion. I haven't had much time to dedicate to shooting over the past 4 years so I am most certainly rusty so I think there is room for improvement. I think that some of my other loads may have performed better with a more competent tester behind the trigger. I look forward trying more powder/bullet combos as I scrape the rust off.

Ergos

The rifle is fairly standard as far as controls go - the inclusion of ambi controls is a nice touch as is the left side charging handle. I particularly like the ambi bolt catch that can be engaged with my index finger of my dominant hand. The only improvement I could suggest here is the inclusion of a charging handle that can be swapped to the other side of the rifle.

The FAST stock isn't great, but it isn't terrible either. The stock is functional but I find the width of the butt pad on the narrow side and the cheek riser doesn't provide enough adjustment for height for use with taller optics.

Reliability

No stoppages yet with any of the mags I've run. I can't really comment on reliability because I've only run approx. 100 rounds through so far.

Lastly, after doing a bit of reading about the XCR-M and the problem with short gas tubes, I used some spare flash suppressor shims to shim the gas tube to eliminate back and forth play in order to help with accuracy. I admit that maybe I was premature in shimming and that I should have tested the rifle without shims first - I will definitely remove the shims to see the effect it has.

XCR's are a great platform, the best of the few quality choices we have in restricted and non restricted configurations. I sold off a lot to buy a small XCR family, and I don't regret the decision.

Nice , mine is a 7.62x39 and i like it a lots ,

the anti XCR team will probably drop by in 5-4-3 ....

We only drop in to laugh at those claiming sub-moa accuracy.
But it is getting old, and this site is full of so many other fairy tales anyhow, what's one more to the pile?

If you want to laugh about sub moa accuracy you should be active in the T97 threads. I never got sub moa with my XCR (the one The OP bought), but I don't reload and I'm terrible. After having that gun I have no doubt it could be moa with a better operator and loads.

The gun was super reliable for me. I just didn't like the ergos. Glad you do Dave.

Congrats on your XCR. I have found that a good 69 grain load with W748 will shoot well out of a toilet paper tube. Just a good load. Don't listen to the nay-sayers.

Nice job op, good shooting.

My XCR shoots sub moe all day long, maybe I'll post some groups.

It's not a misprint. "e" as in elephant. ;)

Although I've had the odd sub moa 3 shot group during load development, most of my XCR's are around 1.25-1.5 moa rifles with handloads at best. Older, looser rifles can't compete with the newer ones in my experience. That is still excellent for a semiauto built for reliability.

Well I have beltfed, 0.9 out of my 6.8., this is going to be great! I can smell the massingale already....

Never tried reloading for the keymod xcr-l in .223 but the factory 55gr Hornady Vmax shot in 1 5/8"@100m after swapping barrels from the 6.8 to .223 after deer season and prior to coyote.

Some more results from yesterday and today

I had the bolt and carrier out last night and didn't notice that the firing pin retaining pin fell out so I had to improvise a fix - luckily I had a spare cotter pin in my car toolbox that was just the right size. The rifle cycled and fed fine with the cotter pin so my range trip wasn't a waste. As for the accuracy, not terribly impressed with most of my shooting but the Hornady 5.56 75 BTHP Match did well. I'm surprised it stabilized out of the 1/9 twist barrel, I will be looking to pickup some of these seeing as they shot this well. All targets were at 200yd.
