I just acquired this winchester 1895 in 40-72 for 100$, a rare deal. However the gun is in serious need of repair. A hole was drilled trough the buttstock and the front sight is gone. A poor excuse of a dovetail was inserted into the barrel.

I had one of these in 303 that had been cut down to 20 inch. Beautiful carving and brass pins installed on the stock.. I stupidly sold it. This will be a great project! Interesting why bubba did the deer carving upside down... like a cave hieroglyph! Really nice piece.

I already ordered a replacement buttstock, however, what really makes me nervous is the dovetail that was cut into the barrel. A good gunsmith is going to have to look at it.

Cut and crown is what I would suggest... and have a qualified smith cut a correct dovetail with a sight... or a short ramp and sight install.

Makes you wonder why the hole in the stock was done... what purpose?

That’s a killer deal! The metal looks like it’s in great shape, there’s a flatside on g*npost for $900 or $1000 or something but it’s in terrible shape. I’m a little jealous of ya!IMG_5618.jpeg
I paid $850 for my pistol grip flatside last summer, factory 38-72 rifle converted to .303, had it reblued recently for giggles. These are really really neat rifles and im very glad they can still be found at a decent price if you look hard enough. Easily my favourite rifles of all time. Welcome to the club :)

maybe to bolt it to the wall as a wall hanger? Deer carving may not actually be upside down

Hope thats not the case B, hope it turns out as an ok project
Was it sold a 'usable' ?
It was sold as a old useless gun that serves no purpose but to collect dust in a safe.

I have repaired stock damage like that by inlaying pieces of matching walnut. Don't use a round or rectangular inlay. An oval shape with pointed ends blends better. Cut the recess around the defect, then fit the patch to the recess, with a little tapered draft on the edges. Once there is a really good fit, glue it in place. Dress flush and spot finish. Done carefully, the repair is unobtrusive.

Here are some before and after pictures of rifle. My gunsmith repaired the mechanism, cleaned the rust, fitted and finished the reproduction 1895 stock onto the rifle.

Gunsmith made a very bad mistake, the stock on Winchester rifles was never a shiny varnish/true oil finish, but a slightly dull linseed oil finish.

I did'nt know, however if it is the case, that is a very unfortunate mistake.

If you can find a good welder, you may be able to mig or tig both those dovetails and recut at the correct position. You'll need a welder that knows what he's doing and be able to control the heat.

If it were mine considering the price you got it for I would have the action case coloured by Oscar kob that is if want to refinish the gun i
