This is my first sks (and firearm, for that matter). I got it from SIR; it was in fairly good condition i.e. one small scratch on the stock, not too dirty, etc. After a thorough cleaning and inspection, I decided to add the following:
ATI Fibreforce stock: I have read many posts and articles on how these are no good, but I decided to get one anyway, and I'm glad I did. My rifle fits into it perfectly. Your mileage may vary. The cheekpiece is horrible, though. On the advice of Surplusrifles, I clamped it on the underside, stuffed a rag in it, and use it now as a cleaning kit carrier. Oh, and yes I modified it slightly (and for the much better) by removing that ugly lump of plastic that blocks the receiver cover from coming off. Who thought that one up, anyway? I had to cut a little lower than was necessary to facilitate the instalation of...
Techsights Rear aperture sight: Very intuitive sight. I find the aperture size to be large enough to work well, and also small enough to offer some measure of accuracy.
Williams Firesight: This thing is amazing! It's so bright when I take it outside, even on a cloudy day. I highly recommend this item.
The paint I used was a $6 rattle can of Krylon Fusion for Plastic (Textured Shimmer) in Cocoa Brown. I chose the textured paint because I wanted a better gripping surface, and I have to say it works quite well. The paint scheme was chosen to make liberals soil their pantaloons. I recommend the Krylon Fusion line of paint for anyone looking to paint a Zytel stock. They say no priming or sanding (I sanded anyway), the paint dries really quickly, and it's quite resistant to chipping off.
Anyway, enough about my precious. I think I'm done with the modifications. Now I just need to name her (it's a her). Any suggestions?
(Sorry for the low quality pic. Not bad for a camera phone, but not great either.)
