I got one of the latest batch from Armco.
I am trying to put together a poor man's Ed Brown Bobtail.

Here's where I started:

Norc Commander with hogue wrap around grips, and a Dlask titainium/magnesuim trigger.

Last night I blanked the slide, and polished some small parts:

I am going to round off the corner of the trigger guard, and give the frame, and slide a carry melt.
Once I can get the bobtail main spring housing, I will contour the frame to match.

I will attempt to drill holes into the sights to install some tritum tubes I have, then square off the sides.
If that won't work, I will install some figure 8 sights.

lemme know if & how you get the rear sight off. i can't seem to get mine off though i've yet to try the air hammer. though the woodchipper is looking like a mighty fine alternative!

or you can buy mine for use as spare parts!

If you don't care about destroying the sight in the process, use a cutoff wheel or hacksaw to cut a notch down the middle of the sight parallel to the dovetail. This will relieve some of the stress and make it easier to tap out. The slide will now be free to be milled for the sight set of your choice.

I am taking the slide to Dlask to get the sights off.
I will see how it goes.

They are crudely fasioned. The sides arent square, or flat.
I don't mind them otherwise. I like that you can use the rear to #### the slide one handed.
They just need to be finished nicer.
It will save some $$$

I used a marble bakers slab ( milled flat surface) and some water on sheets of emery.
By hand, it took about an hour for both sides, and the muzzle.
Started with 180 to get the makings off, then went 220, and finally 600 grit.
I will be giving the entire gun a fine polish before bluing.
I want to get it like a mirror.

The hard part is going to be getting the spring housing shipped up here.
Joe couldn't get it from the catalogue we found it in, so we will have to try other avenues.
I trust Dlask to get the hole in the right place the first time. ( I hope! )

In any case, It might take a while to procure one.

This thread shows a similar project done by Tac Ord. It doesn't mention any issues with getting the MSH, but it is a different brand.

Good to hear. Dlask will do a good job for you. You can order the mainspring housing from Brownells as well. The last part I ordered from them only took a week and a half.

I did a similar project, (the norc in my profile) but I had a smith do all the work. You get more man points for doing it yourself! I love the gun, it is my idpa shooter.

Your psychic...I was planning the exact same build. I was looking at pictures online and most people's bobtail dont line up for crap. Why not pin the mainspring housing in where its supposed to be, drill the new hole then round the old housing and frame at the same time? you'll need to plug the bottom of the modified mainspring housing and probably shorten the spring; but I think this is the way for a smooth fit.
just my 2 cents.

Good project Dook, but as far as a run of bobtails it's a pretty easy modification to make to a stock frame and the bobtail configuration is not for everyone.... a special run would be risky for the importer.

Hunter1970, When you are done with the jig you should make it available on the EE it would be cool if a bunch of nutz could share the cost of the jig!

I remember a member here who got the jig and did the conversion a few years back when the new commander's first came in with the slanted serrations....looked good!
