Ok i got a old p14 that the barrel is not even round inside anymore, its shot out. I am looking at puting something together for some long range fun. So my question is it reasonable to start with this action get a barrel put on? what cal.? i was thinking 300wm? i am good with wood and no problem to build a stock. its aready drilled and taped for a scope. where is a good place for barrels that can put them on and does good work?and what am i looking at in price? or is this crazy should i just save up more money and get a new rem or savage.? looking for a winter project thats not going to breack the bank Thanks for the help guys

I like P14 actions. Mystic Player on this forum has built a few LR rifles on P14 actions. Many people have followed his lead and now use Savage/Stevens actions. A P14 trigger can clean up very nicely. While there aer excellent barrel makers in Canada, if you have access to a US manufacturer, the project can be quite reasonable. In the long run, a used heavy barrel Savage is probably the most economical route but that is not a winter project.

I have an old P14 that I had rebarreled to 7mm Rem Mag. It's as accurate as rifles come, flat shooting and with minimum recoil.

I say use it. From what I've heard those actions are built like tanks. While perhaps not the most economical choice, in the end you'll end up with a unique rifle that is truly yours. I'm looking to get a long range rifle myself and I think I'm going to build a 6.5 Swede on a 96 or 98 action, just to be different.

P14's can handle any big boomer cartridge you want to build. The barrel cost may be a little higher as your gunsmith will need to do a little extra work like cutting the square threads, and notching it for the extractor. There are aftermarket triggers available from DT and Timney. I like the stock military, and the DT. There are also 'tru-feed' kits to make them feed a little smoother, as well as enlarged mag boxes for the longer rounds. (Also, a M17 mag box will work too.)
I currently have a project in the works, but it is on hold until I get back south. It is a P14 in Robertson stock with a Lilja 7mm tube, chambered in .280 AI. It should be fun to try it out and see what it's capable of.

I have 3 chambered in .308. One has a Krieger barrel (28") the other has a Gaillard (30") the 3rd one has a 26" barrel.

I had the action modified to shoot single shot only. They all have a center plate put in ( to give it a center screw) Pillar bedded with target sights. and prone stock. They shoot extremely well up to 1000yds.

Be carefull if it's an Eddystone reciever (ERA). The heat-treatment was spotty on some rifles, so as a group they can be hit and miss. Have the reciever checked for microscopic cracks before re-barreling (magnaflux) and go from there. As a general rule, Remington and Winchester recievers are more consistent.

I've done a number of these projects with both 14s and 17s. They work well.

I completely agree with your choice of .300 Winchester Magnum. Another viable option would be .300 WSM. If you're building a serious rifle for long range target accuracy, these two cartridges would be the top of the heap for that action, with the preference being .300 Winchester. However, a .300 Holland & Holland or a .308 Norma would also be great.

If you're serious, you should spend the bucks and get a premium target barrel. Our Canadian makers, McLennan, Gaillard, Smith and McPhee all make a spectacular, world-class barrel. Expect to pay in the range of $350 for a brand-new stainless match barrel blank and around $150, give or take, to have it chambered, threaded and headspaced.

If this is done right, you should end up with a rifle that is a serious contender. I agree that this project might exceed 50% of the cost of buying a new heavy-barrelled Remington 700 sniper rifle, but the truth is that your (McLennan/Smith/Gaillard/McPhee) barrel alone will be superior to any factory barrel out there. (True, some factory barrels shoot very well, but one of these premium target barrels is almost guaranteed to shoot better.) If you were thinking of a simple hunting rifle (say a Savage), then the factory option would be cheaper and more practical than building one out of a P-14 action with a custom barrel. But if your goal is to build a super-accurate rig with a target barrel, your P-14 will still be cheaper than buying a brand-new Remington 700P, and it should shoot AT LEAST as well.

Let us know how it works out.

Ok i am convinced , i have been staring at this shot out gun for years saying i am going to do something with it. How would a fella get in touch with these 3 (McLennan/Smith/Gaillard/McPhee) to get my barrel. if i can get the barrel on and all the action working just right i can make a syn. stock. I all ready have a 6-16x bushnell and its drilled and taped for the scope. Do this guys mount the barrel them self? paying that much to get one here to let some local smith put it on just makes me sweat. thanks guys i will post pics

You can contact Paul Reibin ( Rangesports Unlimited) at (250) 372 7030 and get either a Mchee or Smith barrel from him, and he can also chamber it for you .
Mick McPhee and Paul seem to be in cahoots on a lot of projects.
Mick builds only .30 cal barrels , BTW, but they have many calibers of Smith barrels available.
Ron can cut up to either .40 or .45 ( can't remember which!)
Rangesports turnaround is super fast and they do top nootch work , specializing in match rifles.

ok i am in the process of getting a barrel i am going with gaillard he seems to have a great rep on here. i have been reading alot on here about guys with p14 that are done up. i see some on here that are in .308 i thought the bolt was no good for a 308?? thats why i went with 300wm . 308 would be better for price but i think i will like the little extra over my buddies 308 savage. i don't want to have to mess with the bolt or mag if i don't have to. i am getting the after market trigger and #### on open kit. and for the stock i want to go with a thumbhole stock as long as its legal to take to the woods for a hunt( got a big hunt in the works in the yukon for 2008 :) can not wait) Thanks guys and i have found so much info on this site.
