Last year for my retirement my wife bought me my choice of a .338 Lapua. (I have the best wife!!!). So I did my research and ordered a Patriot Arms. I waited almost a year and over that time did a lot of talking over the phone with the owner Jered Joplin and found him to be an exceptional guy.

As we share a passion for distance rifles, hunting and fishing I invited him up from Georgia to Alberta for some deer and moose hunting. I had all my hunter host paperwork set up and the day after I picked him up from the airport I went to Milarm Ed. and my rifle was there. It was awesome to have someone of the skill level he is show me the ins and outs of my rifle. And bring me up to speed on more aspects of distance shooting than I'd ever seen or heard about. He is a fantastic shot. To give him his just credit he won "Big Rock" last year in the states.

We had 2 weeks of hunting and it was some of the most intense hunting I have ever done.

I promised him a 180+ deer and I delivered as he took a 185 non-typical whitetail. Which is now mounted in his shop.

This year his reciprocated the favor and I just got back from 10 days in Jefferson GA. I took down my Remington .300 WM and my Remington .22-250 to get the Patriot Arms treatment. Not only was I treated like one of the family I can honestly say it's totally true when you hear of southern hospitality. I wish every enthusiast could have had the same experience I had. Totally amazing. I got to hang out in the shop, watch them at work. Try a bunch of wicked rifles and handguns. Shoot on their range. And got to see how building precision rifles happen. (and lots of dippin' and drinking beer)

He are some pics and specs of my rifles for you to look at and hopefully enjoy. I'm not trying to show off or gloat but merely give you a look at some fine rifles. I hope you like!!!!

As far as we know these are the only 3 PA rifles in Canada. (as Jered as the owner)

I'm not going to post range reports. These guns are guaranteed to shoot .5 MOA before they leave the shop. They all do that and more often than not, better. I wish I was a better shot to do all 3 of these rifles justice. If you want to see how they shoot, ask me on the range. If your not a gimp and I think you'll appreciate them I'll let you fire some groups. I am still working on my reloads as well and as always there is room for improvement. I have let some of my buddies who are snipers for the CF shoot the .338 and they were VERY impressed. (it just made me sad to not be at their shooting level!!)

I hope you enjoyed this LONG post and the pics. Again I don't want to turn this into something p!ssy. If you want to ask me questions or more info please feel free to leave a comment or a PM. If your going to be a d!nk I will not personally respond. But feel free to leave a comment for the others.

2 magazines to check out Patriot Arms are, Special Weapons (April 2006) pg. 48 for the .338, and Special Weapons (April 2004) pg. 14, 1000m Sureshot, .308

And lastly my thanks to both for all their work, their hospitality and patience for the 4-5 thousand questions I must have asked. And even more thanks for the joy of wearing a S&W stubby .357 on my hip the whole time everywhere I went. That was pretty cool!!!

And a big thanks to "KLUNK" who helped my with the pics. And over the last 4 days has eaten half the fridge, half my beer and ALL my whiskey!!! :)

Please be patient if you are waiting for a response to question, I don't live on this site so it may take me a couple of days.

I've delt with Jerred over the phone, nothing but a gentleman.

He also mentioned his hunting trip up here with you come to think of it!

That was one of the key factors in my purchase of my first gun. He was by far the best guy I had dealt with over the phone, never had attitude, listened to all my questions and helped me with the "knowledge" I thought I knew about precision rifles. And didn't bulls!t about delivery time.

He made my purchase of the Lapua perfect and I totally recommend if your looking into doing something like this to give him a shout. Even if you don't buy a rifle you will for sure get some great advice and insight on going about the process. He is limitless in his knowledge. He's the only guy I have ever talked to who totally knows what he is talking about.

I don't want to give a negative spin to gun makers in Canada (I would have prefered to support a company up here) but no one came even close. I dealt with some real d!ck heads up here in different provinces.

So I went south. The only problem was trying to be patient with the import/export process.

If you are finding the same problems I did, give him a shout. It's easier than people think.

Yeah he Jared is alway bugging me for 10/22 info. I blueprinted hima cooey 22 it shoots 1.5 moa at 10 meters. Just kidding. He is a good guy and so is the bigbully. He even lets you shoot his rifles at the range:) or the back yard before the BBQ :)

For all interested parties...
I worked through MilArm (Edmonton) for the Importation portion of the gun and then Leroy's big valley guns on the US (export) side. My wife was part owner in MilArm for a long time and Gord did me a favor and brought in the gun for me. I got the "friends and family" price. I am not sure what he is charging these days to get one across the border.

Normal process is filling out the Canadian importation paperwork (need all details of the firearm; serial, bbl length, type etc..). Once submitted to Ottawa it takes approx. 2 weeks to come back approved. This paperwork is then submitted to an licensed exporter in the US (very hard to find; I used Leroy's. Gord knows Denise very well) She applies for the license once she has your firearm in her hands. Once she submits her side of the paperwork to BATF the turnaround time is approx 3-4 months. She then ships the firearm to MilArm. From there Gord receives it and verifies all the serial, bbl etc. and submits a request for registration in Canada, this will take about 1-2 weeks as long as there is no complications. All told I waited about 1 year from start to finish. I had to wait about 2 months for the stock to come in, some parts take forever. I also bugged Gord every week to make sure paperwork was submitted. GET COPIES OF ALL PAPERWORK!!! (from both importer/exporter sides, this way nothing goes missing)

Now remember the time includes build time on the firearm. I did all this over a year ago so things may have changed for processing the paperwork. You should verify everything with Gord if you require his help. I know there is other dealers in Canada who will also do this paperwork. Lucky Dollar in Sask. is a good one, he used to go to the border to pick up your firearm, no waiting for a trucking company. I would think with shipping, brokerage and paperwork (not the firearm) you are looking at around $500-$600 for the importation. Its expensive but worth it if you are having a custom firearm built. Better still if you know a few guys wanting customs then the price evens out for the work, better cost.

Hope this helps you out. PATIENCE PATIENCE PATIENCE!!!

Cheers

P
