Some of us have those rifles that we just can't do without. Mine is my remington 541-T HB. I searched for one of these for quite a few years and finally got my hands on one. This has been an outstanding rifle for me. There isn't much out there in the way of aftermarket stocks so I figured to try my hand at modifying one. I use my rimfires as practice for centerfire matches. When I did compete with my Remington 700s, The little 541 felt very much like a smaller version. Since I have aftermarket stocks on all my rifles now, I wanted something similar in feel as the new centerfire counterparts and this was my progress...........
I ordered a stock from Numeriches when we could actually get them up here from the states. I paid $46 canadian dollars to get it here. Some bondo, epoxy and lots of sandpaper later, this is what I came up with.
The original walnut with checkering and the wooden add ons that will be the bulk of the stock to build on.
Side by side images of bedding.
I wanted the butt end of the stock to look and feel like my Bell and Carleson Medalist stock and the front end to feel more like my HS precision. a bit of sanding later and this is where I was at.
Then it was on to the bondo to contour and fill gaps.
Again with lots of sanding I started to achieve the look and feel I was after.
I needed a bit more beef in the front end and several months later playing in my spare time, I ended up with this..........
There are still a few minor imperfections. I can work these out as time permits. Im really happy with the outcome. Now if the snow would just melt I can get out and see how things came together.
