Well since everything has finally shown up in the mail and my rifle is together I would like to start documenting and sharing with everyone my slow travels to the 1000 yard mark!

This is my first "Precision" rifle and first ever build. This is also very much a budget based build. Ive started with the Remington 700 SPS Tactical in 308 and managed to top it off with an EGW 0 MOA one piece base, a set of TPS TSR rings and a Falcon Menace 4-14x44 FFP with ML16 reticule and 1/4 MOA turrets.

So far with getting some good deals off the EE ive run in at exactly $1200 from what I can remember.

Yesterday I took her out for the first time to break it in and just have some fun so I never took any groups. This weekend I plan on actually sitting down and shooting some groups to see what I can do with it.

Im gradually going to increase my range as my skill set allows me. I will also upgrade and change the rifle as I take the journey!

PICTURES! Im no photographer so dont expect much! Haha

Right on!

Good on you for reaching out to that kind of distance- it CAN be done with a .308.

Once you get your system zeroed, and your come ups for various longer ranges, shooting at long range is really all about enviromental factors; air temperature, humidity, slant and light for elevation, and dancing with the wind (reading mirage) and light for windage.

Keep lots of notes, and sit and think about them after you get home from the range. Soon you can organize your target records into groups for differing conditions, and ultimately fill out a small, single card summarizing your scope settings for a wide variety of conditions.

I look forward to watching your results!

I have almost the exact same setup, different base. I love this gun, groups really nice with 168grn, I've had it out to 500 and has been very good to me in hunting season, Congrats on the rig, hope to see some pics if your progress, happy shooting
Cheers

Nice deer! I'm going to use mine for hunting aswell for the 2011 season. That is one of the reasons I opted for the shorter barrel was for portability.

Bambie won't know what hit him this year!

Good on ya, and good luck. It's a little heavy to pack around all day but that's a sacrifice I'll make to hunt with precision rig, also look into getting a oversize bolt knob, I found it made a difference cycling
Cheers

hey man. honestly the day you go out shooting putting some 100y groups, if you are able to set up a target at 1k go and do it.

You can do it and its gona feel good.

What takes a while with a rifle is finding a good long range ammo and learning first hand what its drop is at varying distance. Keep a log of the temperature and elevation on the days you shoot as well.

Sounds like you are off and running!....What have you "built"? I must have missed something because it sounds like you have only put a scope on your Remington.

I havent actually built anything yet! This is just the start of it all. As I shoot it more and learn more I will make my changes as I go. Not a custom build or anything yet but its a base im going to use to do one in the future when I feel I can shoot well enough to make it worth while.

Im going to keep this thread going as I progress farther into the "precision" rifle world and keep everyone updated on any of the changes I make to the rifle and document how my skill slowly developes.

This is all new to me and im really excited about it all and I know the rifle is only a small part of the equation and will most deffinatly out shoot me.

Well I have a slight update and some more shooting reports!

Shes been dropped into an HS precision 700P take off, Good bye Noodle stock!

I made it to the range last weekend with Ultimate_monkey and put about 100 rounds through it of various crap factory ammunition. Did some shooting out to 200 yards on a gong and some 300 yard shooting aswell. She has major potential just have to load up some real ammo before I go back to the range!

Will post some paper results once ive got something decent to show haha :p Some good ammunition and more trigger time is needed so expect to hear more soon enough!

she even looks better out of the noodle stock!

if we can meet up dureing the week or somthing i can get that brass from ya and toss er in the tumbler and we can get some real ammo put togther on saturday or somthing!

Bedding is cheap compared to the components and gas spent chasing an inconsistent rig.

Dennis Sorenson Guntech is close by and should be able to get it done for a reasonable price.

If he is too busy, I can help. If the action is wiggling around in the stock, it will do you no good.

If you need some tips and ideas on loading, I have info in my Tech section on my website. Will get you dialed in fast.

Jerry

Yeah im going to get a hold of guntech and see what it will cost to get it bedded and get it done and over with.

Just bought some powder, primers, and bullets today to play with so going to get Ultimate_monkey to give me a hand loading it all up until I get my own equipment. Expect to hear another range report and hopefully some pictures of some targets!

Next step is to get it bedded, get my own reloading supplies, and get some more trigger time behind it!

your 168gr will start to #### the bed around 600-700m you need to try 155 lapua scenars. i dont know anyone that can get them to shoot crazy at 100m but out to
1000m they are just awsome. you will probobly have to set them 5-10 thou into the lands to get them to shoot. thats what worked for me.
