To make a long story short, I am getting back into hunting and shooting after about a 12 year, unintentional hiatus. After getting my licencing and registration in order, I got back the only rifle I have ever owned from my brother who had safely stored it for me.

This 1955 Savage Model 99F in .300 Savage was given to me years ago from an aging gentleman that no longer used it. In a way, I am glad that I haven't seen it for so long as I didn't appreciate what I was given at the time. Since I made the decision eight months ago to get the rifle back, I have become more interested in hunting firearms and their history than I ever have (I must be growing up). Of course, I read much about the 99.

Last weekend, my brother brought it to me and I am very grateful to have it again. It is in very good condition, in my opinion, except for the lacquer job on the stock that I will refinish next winter. I hunted with it years ago, but I have never taken an animal with it. I know that there are a myriad of firearms out there that are more expensive, better performing, better looking, and with better manufacturing but this one is mine and I am very proud to own it. I'm hooked... :D

Beautiful gun should help you put some meat on the table, 300 savage will do anything up to moose and elk so you're good to go with it!

Welcome back to the sport!

I inherited my dad's 99C in .308 when he passed on. I told my nephew (13) when he passes his CORE course it will be his. He always talked about being gramps' hunting partner when he was little. My wife and I told him he would be our hunting partner. He passed his course so I'll hold it in trust, true to my word. I've had him out shooting it once! To him it's special because it belonged to his gramps, his gramps was his best friend. He cherishes it the way that it sounds like you cherish yours! Enjoy it, shoot it, and don't let the liberals take it away!

Many years ago I borrowed a sav. 99 in .300 sav. and used it to kill my first big game animal, a moose.

Years later I got around to buying one (well 2 actually) for myself. I have used it to take a few white-tails.

A couple of wolves. (I used all six shots in the rifle to whittle them down)

And the last moose that I killed.

A great little gun in a great little round.

Very nice pics Duffy!! I hope to take a deer or moose with it this season, though it has been awhile. It will be my first time hunting in Alberta; I'm really looking forward to the fall.

Do you use factory loaded ammunition or reload? I do not reload as of yet, so I'm thinking of just sighting it in with 180gr soft points (Federal) for the season.

Umm...well, there are more expensive rifles. Other than that, you have an extremely well-built, beautiful rifle in a cartridge that, when introduced, was the equal of the .30-06.
Best of luck hunting with that old beauty.

Looks good supr. Grampa had one just like that. Dad stumbled with it an buggered the muzzle. Grampa couldnt figure why it wouldn't shoot straight anymore so he traded it for a 99R in 308. He has shot only a few bears with it since moving up by Grande Prairie, one was a monster. He's taken it horseback for Bighorn but sadly never rested a bead on a ram.
Maybe one day our boy will carry it seeing as he seems to be a south paw.

Take care of that nice iron and we're all looking forward to the field report this fall.

well said...that's a beautiful, quality rifle and a good calibre for most big game. My dad has a 99F just like it in that cal. Sure you get more accuracy out of a bolt but you won't see me with one, I love old levers just like this one.

Actually the 99 is an accurate rifle, the bolt block cams up and lockup is solid. The 99 does not take a back seat in accuracy,

I agree with Kilo Charlie. The 99 was a beautiful rifle and the 300 Savage is no slouch as a big game cartridge. That's a beautiful outfit...don't refinish it, just take it out hunting.

I have an identical rifle and it shoots great. If you reload try 165 gr bullets with a near max load of either IMR 4895 or RL 22. It is a great compromise between the 150 and the 180 grain factory ammo. Enjoy your great rifle.

As I have two .300 sav. 99s, I sighted in one with 150 gr. federals and the other with 18 gr. federals.

Then I reloaded 165 gr. bullets.
