Better pics to follow, it is a wet cold dark day today.
The paint is more a rich red, but the camera flash was on.

As long as I'm...
A) Not moving much.
B) Looking for grouse.

Then the deer won't notice.
At least now it matches our car. :D

Wow!! I remember a while back you posted a question about what paint to use on an ATI stock, obviously you figured it out ;) Looks great! The 5-round duckbill looks cool too, you can't beat those John Mason steel mags for LCF :D Good job!

Hey Calum, please tell me where you get that magazine from. Me liky.

c

I got it from an upstanding guy named poweredbybeer, not sure where he got them from.

I painted the stock back in the spring, and wasn't sure what I was going to do with it, but when I saw the mag on the rifle I thought...oh yah the original chu-wood stock is going in a box in the closet. :D

Now if I can just figure out how to keep the cleaning rod from coming loose during firing...WITHOUT DUCT TAPE. :D

looking good.....did you have to use a primer?

Nope the krylon Bonds in with the plastic.

I did some wear tests on another chunk of zytel I had around the house, and I found a primer would allow the paint to flake off in chunks, while this stuff will simply scratch a bit as normal.

The satin (or satan) finish toned the gloss down of the paint. :) Also the black part on the grip is black krylon, that I sprayed in a cup, and hand brushed on.

Next will be one of them Marstar cheek pieces that holds the cleaning kit, and a butt pad. Then while I wait for my Kalinka mount, and scope budget, I'm throwing an red dot on one of them wiggly receiver cover mounts for plinking.

I got them from another CGN'r a long time ago. I think it was spryan, but I'd have to check my trader rating to be sure. If you want some of your own, you could try ordering one or two from sksman.com, they go for $25 US each.

As far as your cleaning rod problem Calum, you could try one of these;
clrdretain_installed.jpg
clrdretain_piece.jpg

It's a cleaning rod retainer, available from sksman.com, that bolts to your bayo lug and provides tension on the cleaning rod. It's a little ugly IMHO, but it'll solve your problem. He sells 'em for $15 US. Look under the "tools" section on his website.

that krylon stuff is great for the zytel. I did my dragunov stock glossy chocolate brown (sorry, the woman has my camera) and it looks great. i only did 3 total coats, and a little extra where needed. no flaking.

the red looks really really good. Im not a fan of the ultralite stock (i hate the curve in it) and id like to see that color on a monte carlo stock, but nonetheless great job man!

Now Calum, when I stop hunting with SKS in another 30 or 40 years, you're gonna teach me how to paint my SKS. But I want different color though. :D

SWEET!
That is the ticket right there!
Oh wait...the bayo lug on mine has the screw part ground away. :(
Hmmm...I must think about this, that is certainly the right idea though. :)
