Nice job!

Looks awesome!

I recently refinished one with shellac, but it started to flake off in areas that probably had a little cosmoline buried somewhere deep in the wood.

So now I'm refinishing it again with Minwax Tung Oil Finish (fake Tung oil...there's a little in there, but it's mostly boiled linseed oil and some thinners). I'll have pics too when it's done in a couple days!

I'm curious about your photography setup. Photography is my other hobby (aside from guns).

The photos look really well thought out and executed.

Awesome job AK72.

For the benefit of the unenlightened (me :p), how'd you do it?? I'd like my SKS to look that good (and I don't give a damn about the stock cartouches).

Hi shredder
1. Sand to the point where you see no clear coat or old color att all.
2. Cleaning - Use solvent/mineral spirits to clean up you stock a specially inside bedding, in my case internal part of stock was molded with cosmo and cleaning chemicals, so I would say this step is very important and affect your final result.
3. Varnishing - I used on my stock Polyurethane Varnish, do few layers every next layer will allow you to adjust color to darker, when you finish with varnishing use steel wool and do very light sanding around whole stock.
4. Clear coat - In my case I used Shellack "Zinnser -369G Spray" from home Depot, I've done about 6 coats with 3 hour between coats to let it dry, for better result after every single coat I sanded with steel wool to get smooth surface.
5. Final look - after minimum 24 hours you can give your stock final finish by polishing with very soft material or wool add olive oil for fine result, or you can do satin/mate finish like in my case by using P2000 sand paper.
Beauty of Shellac is that this finish so strong that you can use any kind of gun cleaning solutions without damaging finish at all, it is so strong - proved.

Good luck.
sorry for my English :)

Nicest refinish on an SKS I've seen yet!!!!

Two thumbs up for keeping the original character of the stock!... I have seen many done in tung oil etc, that just look pale and lifeless, and take away the soul of these guns IMHO...

Nice job AK72. After seeing this Im thinking of dooing it with my sks stock I still have that my tapco stock is in place of it. Ill see how well it looks then chagne my other wood sks stock with the new one. Thanks for the info how to do it.

Great looking stocks for sure. It appears nothing can compare to the original shellac job the Russians did on their wood. Just recently redid the finish on my M44 which was previously finished with what I believe was tungoil or BLO. Really didn't care much for the look(lacked the commie character)so I pulled the oil which was a real pain in the ass and used a Minwax stain and a few coats of polyurethane to seal the deal. Looks pretty decent but still doesn't have that rich deep red that only shellac can give.I'll post some pics when I can.
