Here we go....

So I wanted a rifle I could hunt with and something that would defend the castle in case of times more evil. I got the idea that I would like to have a SKS and a few 1000 rounds around just in case. It was light, cheap and there are bullets everywhere. So I bought an SKS and a few thousand rounds and a few hundred hunting rounds besides. I sighted it in and found that the thing shot better with the bayonet extended, nothing to talk about but I was confident that at the less than 100 metre ranges of my property I could kill a deer. I hunted with the first season after buying. It was respectable in the bush although the bayonet extended must have looked strange (had anyone actually come on to my land) but it shot better with the bayonet extended! The sling snap hook was loud, very loud in the bush! Late in the fall, I bought the trigger spring kit, firing pin kit, and Techsights 200, a Remington nylon sling and removed the bayonet. Sighted it in again, and again, decent but no precision rifle. The Techsights are real nice the sight picture is there easily and quickly.

That winter I got the tacicool bug, I bought an ATI Strikforce stock, convertible two point - one point tactical sling, forward grip, extended mag release and a TACPO 5/20 round mag. I gouged out a cavity on the ATI stock to fit the Techsights and took to the woods to carry and shoot it. It shot OK, it had a cool tactical feel like my army gun but, heck, it was heavy and not very comfortable. So I put it away for a while and spent my spring with a muzzle loader trying to scare up a bear. There was a laser do-dad and flashlight added that were not in the pic. The stock is a pain for a trigger group strip as you must remove the pistol grip to get at the trigger group.

Well, another deer season rolls around, and I pull the SKS out. What to do next, I am unhappy with the tacticool feel, it looks mighty dangerous but it feels like stump to haul around. So, go more fuddicool (I just made that up!) says I. I get a ATI Monte Carlo stock (gouge another hole to fit the techsights) and a nice M1907 Marksman leather sling on QD swivels, perforated metal upper hand guard, Lee Handloader, 7.62x39 dies and load some 150 grain power bullets. Second magazine and I cut that to 5 rounds flush. Sight the whole thing in again and go hunting. 3 days later, I am not happy with it. The ATI stock is heavy but not overall just on the butt, it must be resin filled, the butt weighs more than the rest of the rifle. The monte carlo stock does not work well with the Techsights sight line and I have force my cheek into the butt to get a sight picture (think shooting with a low mounted scope with a high stock comb).

In terms of ease of cleaning the Techsights are a pain, 5 screws must be undone in order to get at the bolt assembly. The sights do keep their zero when installed properly but it is an extra effort of small screws making a field strip harzardous. Well, here I am almost full circle, the original stock is re-installed, I have put the bayonet back on. I still have the Techsights but have ordered a Williams Firesight set up and a new cover latch and pin to make my field strip an ease again. So for about 350 bucks I have learned that the SKS is an all round good performing bush carbine as is, but, the only real improvements I recommend are tigger pull and the firing pin spring, one for comfort and one for safety. The sights I did for my own quark of training most of my military career on peep sights (FNC1). Peeps sights used to be called a poor man's scope before scopes got so cheap.
Anyone need some used stocks cut for the Techsights...LOL.
One last thing if you do stuff to these rifles, do nothing that cannot be undone, keep the original parts. Years from now you will wish you had. I know I am! The end product still waiting the fire sights:
