My Stevens Re arrangement

I thought about lower rings too, but my advice from Mystic Precision was that these were the ones I needed. I am sure he has waaay more experience than I in this regard. I did attach a photo with sunshade on to show clearance.

You need trigger time to decide if its comfortable for you. Thats all that really matters. Its an easy fix in the future if you feel you need to change it.

Welcome to the addiction. :p

The loose sling mounts are easy to fix. Remove the two mounts (their threaded together) and file a bit off the end of the spacer that goes through the stock until there is not clearance. I use a couple of allen wrenches through the sling stud holes to turn them. simple.

Did Jerry know you were going to use that rail? It adds a fair bit of height.

Nice build. I would like to go this route myself. I was planning on same gun, same stock, same rail, but going with a 26" Shilen in 223 AI with a 1 in 8" twist and making do with my Falcon Menace for a while.

What I like about it is you can do it a bit here and there. You can buy the rifle, mount the rail and scope and shoot the hell out it. Then add the stock, barrel and trigger later as funds permit. :)

SoBored,
Yes Jerry did know about the rail as he sold it to me. Just to be clear, I am not saying I have the wrong set up, just saying that this was recommended. In fact I was out shooting again this weekend and found the scope height to be comfortable. I think most of my problems are with the scope eye relief and having the scope set too far back. I seem to have to remind myself to ease my head back when shooting off the bench. That would explain not being able to find the sweet spot when shooting prone as I am used to creeping up quite close to open sights.

All in all, I still am quite happy with the set up as is. I just need to start reloading and case prep on the new unfired brass. Just waiting on dies to arrive. Thanks for all opinions.

You will find that taller scopes are better when shooting prone.

These scopes do have very long eye relief so yes, you will need to move them forward to get a proper view through the scope.

Enjoy...

Jerry

Look what arrived today! Mystic Precision bipod, thanks to Canuckchap.

Thanks for all the compliments on the rifle.
I was hoping to post some targets today but unfortunately the weather forgot to cooperate so it will have to wait for awhile.

Well I finally found the time to head to the range and try out the new rifle. Only had time to try these out at 100yds. Loaded up some Win brass with CCI450 primers, Varget, and 55 grain Hornady varmit bullets. Below are the pics of the targets. Other than my poor shooting technique, and other comments? By the way it was hot today, and there was a little wind from rear, switching to right rear occasionally. There were a couple of shots that were way out there and I called them at the time...but my spotter did not mark them so now I cannot remember. Oh well, I think that there is some promise in further tests. Oh yes, Mystic Precision's bipod works VERY well..thanks.

Nice...

A bit more load work and some serious trigger time will shrink those groups by 75% :D
Try a box of 69gr Sierra Match Kings when you get a chance! Very forgiving to reload and shoot well from almost any rifle.

I have both the Choate and the B&C stocks... The Choate is on a 300wm and the B&C is on a stevens in .223... Both are quite nice, the Choate is very solid and the B&C is very well built... I give the edge to B&C only because I like there traditional rounded bedding block over Choates V-block but it's merely psychological preference over proven engineering...

Tikka223 thanks for the idea. I will keep that in mind for the future. I should have mentioned this is new brass that has been sized and checked for length etc.

I second that, my Stevens in .223 works very well with 69gr SMKs over 24.6gr of Varget, IIRC. We basically have the same rifles a part from the optics and stocks so I can't see why your rifle wouldn't like the same load :D

I have the same rifle set up except I have the Choate tactical adjustable stock and a rifle basix trigger and different optic. Everything else is the same. The first time out with it I shot a group at 100 yards that was under the size of a dime.
