Out of my collection these are my favourite shotguns. I'm not too much into overly accessorized "tactical" shotguns or semi-autos. I stick to the basics of simple and reliable.

The Mossbergs:

I went with U.S. Military configurations with these ones. I studied the different configurations of Mossbergs in U.S. Military inventory and let's say there is allot of them.

The top one is clone of the 500MILS type used by the U.S. Army. I went with the Airborn configuration. It started out as a #50521 with a parkerized finish. I swapped out the action bar assembly, trigger group, safety, front bead from a 590A1. Not too many have a heatsheild in service... but I did it anyway for badassery.

The bottom is a 590A1 in a USMC Embassy Security Group riot configuration. Which isn't too common even if Mossberg advertises it as a "U.S. Service Model". The USMC actually uses the 500M MILS pattern 590A1 6-shot heavy 20" barrel. The USN being a 16" heavy barrel. Some outfits use the 9-shot with GRS... again, not too common.

Enough history and facts. On to the Remingtons:

I've always been a fan of the USMC 870 Mk 1, well... any of the 870M shotguns with the bayonet lug. I will get a clone built one day but, finding parts is a test of patience and money. So I built a 870P into a close representation. Too bad the modern steel in Rem barrels don't take grey parkerizing too well.

The bottom gun is probably the most usfull of these four. It's a 870P with a Remington Military 14" fixed mod choke barrel with XS express sights. I built it as a bear/cougar/buffalo/rabbid elk... etc defence gun. Shoots slugs good enough and shoots 00 or #4 nice and tight.

Anyone else want to pitch in?

Thanks for posting pictures of your rigs BeaverMeat.

I'm in the same camp when it comes to "tactical" shotguns, simple no BS.

in no particular order:

#1 - 14" 590a1 w/XS big dot tritium, Hogue 12.5" LOP, oversized safety, Mcarbo trigger springs, S&J follower etc.

#2 - 18.5" fluted barrel 590a1 w/XS big dot tritium, Hogue 12.5" LOP, oversized safety, Mcarbo trigger springs, S&J extension & follower etc.

#3 - NEA 14" 870P w/Wilson tritium GRS, Hogue 12.5" LOP, oversized safety, Timney trigger fix, S&J extension & follower etc.

#4 - 14" Low Pro XS sights (same as yours) 870P, Hogue 12.5" LOP, oversized safety, Timney trigger fix, S&J extension & follower etc.

#4 - 14" Wingmaster w/XS tritium Big Dot, Shockwave Raptor grip, oversized safety, Timney trigger fix, S&J extension & follower etc.

I love compact tough reliable 12 gauge shotguns and it's tough to beat 590a1's & 870P's.

Sorry, I'm GCN photo illiterate.

My favorite military style shotgun is the Ithaca 37 in typical Vietnam issue guise.

Unfortunately I don't have one but I plan on getting one eventually.

Keep fighting the urge to get an M37 but eventually will probably give in.

I've looked at all the potentials and see no need to go beyond the 590a1, 870P/Wingmaster and the Ithaca 37 for 12 gauge pumps.

The Fabarm STF-12 is worth a look too, in some ways the best of the bunch.

I'm not sure if it qualifies as a military shotgun though even though its NATO certified since I don't know if its been adopted by anyone yet?

Beyond that I'd also like to have a Benelli M4 and even build me a Vietnam era Remington 7188 clone.

Already have a 14" Fabarm ! Honestly I forget sometimes, doesn't get used much although it's a great SG.

Damn, that Remington 7188 looks great !! Don't think I've read too much about that guy.

The 7188 was only produced in very small numbers and was a flop because of reliability issues, but that might have been because it wasn't supported adequately by Remington.
