My thinking for a first hunting rifle

For a one stop that is for anything, 45-70 takes down everything from dear too grizzly, light, compact & simple. usually lever though which is what I like and ammo $$$. Also 100-200 but for a 1st gun you wont be hitting anything beyond that anyway for awhile.

That "eat right up to the hole" thing was true, and nice! Depending on bullet.

The 45-70 was outclassed militarily by both the 44 Rimfire and 7x57. The 32-40 and 38-55 ate it's lunch on the target range and the 30WCF killed and buried it as a hunting round.
