So I bought a 204 for my wife after I sold her 223 because I sold my 223 and wanted to try something else. I upgraded her to a Remington SPS Varmint. I bedded the stock and loaded up some 32g Hornady and 30g bergers.

First off the x-mark trigger is aweful and has to go. I got it down to about 3+ lb pull and it can't move the slightest lower with out the movement of the bolt triggering it. Oh, and I broke the screwdiver bit off in the sear adjustment pin and its stuck in there now...DOH!

I tried out the honandys and the bergers. I got best results from the bergers. So I loaded up a few more a bit hotter and took em out to 200 yards yesterday. It was about -16 and like 0 wind and a fresh dump of snow, perfect. I was playing with the scope and once I figured out the adjustment to 200 from 100 and I shot a really good 3 shot group trying hard to not let the messy trigger screw me up too bad. I knew I messed up once so I fired a 4th. Anyways, it shot a perfect 3 shot cloverleaf at 200 -minus the one that I knew was off due to retarded trigger. I gotta post the pic later cuz it was pretty awesome for a factory load.

Just gotta get my wife out now to try it out. Its frikken cold tho.

Glad to see you like yours, also picked one up recently and have had great results with 32g hornady's (factory). I changed the stock and bedded the action, as well as lightening up the trigger. I have some reloads ready and am wanting to head back to the range, just too cold today, maybe tommorow. See you are from Brandon also, maybe catch you at the range sometime.

I've got an SPS V in .204, as well as another guy I work with... We both love ours, Im looking at putting an HS stock under it and see what it can do...

Come on...................

Yea, see you there, when the -30 snaps...again.

Get out in the cold. :slap: It never stopped you yesterday. This is MB and it has not broke since about the last week of deer season.

I will be there as soon as I pickup my new wheels from Kellehers.:(

Since my 95gr loads are not working in the cold out of my 6BR I made some new lighter loads with 80 and 88gr Bergers. Will try them out after the possible snow passes.

the xmark triggers aren't bad at all, i have mine down at exactly 1.5 pounds and it wont drop even if i slam the butt on the ground hard 10 times. the x marks aren't like the old 700 triggers, the over travel and sear engagement screws are cemented in with an epoxy that resists heat and solvents, but the glue on the pull weight screw can be easily removed.

now when you say about 3+ pounds are you using a trigger pull gauge or guessing ?

No, I'm guessing, but it is bad. The 243 is an SPS with the Xmark and its ok, it has a descent pull. I can not even get close to that light on this trigger without it failing.

I have mine down to 2 1/2 lbs (measured) and it seems great. Not sure what the difference would be, would like to compare them sometime to see how much difference there is.

That is an awesome group you've got there. 200 yards too! I't making me rise my eyebrow to a .204 now.....hmmmmm......204. The coldest it's got here so far is about -15. I guess we're a bit spoiled.

I have a set of CADPAT gore-tex bib pant's or what ever you want to call them. They keep me warm, and stll alow me to wear a sweater to have felxibility for getting in behind the rifle. I don't know about -30 without a coat on though.

I have not adjusted my trigger on my 700 Yet. It's not a X MARK. Which screw is the one for weight? Do both need to be adjusted together?

Dutchie, all you need is a decent trigger pull gauge, an rcbs pull gauge should run you 20 or 30 dollars.

this is a pretty good article on adjusting rem 700 triggers
http://www.quarterbore.com/library/articles/rem700trigger.html

trying to adjust a trigger with out a pull gauge is kind of like trying to drive a car blind, its both stupid and dangerous :)

Good article for the old triggers. The old remmy triggers were awesome. I have one on my 270 and it is great.

I don't see how it is dangerous to not have a pull gauge. Driving blind is one thing, guessing what my trigger pull is and testing to make sure it won't missfire is not un-safe.

Ok, Geeze, now I'm going to need a few other things too....Torque wrench for the action screws and a trigger pull guage. It never ends, and that's a good thing, if I have to justify it to the wife!

Is there a way to look at the trigger housing and tell if it's an X MARK?
