I just received my Mosin Nagant M44 and was researching every marking trying to get an idea as to where it's been.

There is one marking on the stock that I haven't been able to track down and I was wondering if anyone here had any ideas. A friend suggested that it may be a capture marking, but I haven't found anything supporting this theory.

Any help that you could lend would be greatly appreciated!

I would dig in this site first, likely there's something there. It's the greatest Mosin resource I've found: 7.62x54r.net

I just received my Mosin Nagant M44 and was researching every marking trying to get an idea as to where it's been.

They all look the same in profile. A nice clear picture of the top of the receiver would help. Knowing things like year of manufacture and arsenal would help. Is it a refurb?

I'm throwing my $2 in with Swiend. Post war Polish M44?

Its a post war Izhevsk, 1947 I believe. I cant remember if it is a refurb... I have shot the rifle, im the friend who has no idea what this marking means! I have tried 7.62x54r.net, and they have no idea either!

I had a polish m44 I gave it to my uncle as a gift. It is a tack driver. 1" groups at 100 yards. Unbelievable workmanship as well. Mine was a 1953. The polish m44's have the date on the top of the receiver in an elliptical ring.

My Pole is a '53 aswell, and your right about the great workmanship. Everybody laughs when they see the Mosin carbine at anything past 100m, they usually stop after a few rounds have hit the target!!

Hey all, I took some other pictures for consideration. These should help clear up some of the other issues.

Thanks for all of your help!

All 3 Stock markings

No no, just touchups. There are a couple small spots of rust (tiny spot on top of hood, and some on the front underside of the lower housing) and some bluing to touch up. Not sure if i should bother doing some touchups on the stock or not.

Was I correct in the identification of that stock stamp? Any idea on the other circular one?

with the tiny rust spot try steel wool and hoppes, i wouldnt try the cold blueing. Ive seen it look really blotchy and uneven. With the stock circles im pretty sure your bang on. and LEAVE THAT STOCK ALONE!!!

Not that it really helps but the guy who runs carbinesforcollectors has two M44 with the HEC4 stamp and he doesn't know their origin either.

Agree, the round one looks like the CCCP cartouche with the center worn away.

LEAVE THAT STOCK ALONE!!! lol. Yup. That's a nicer M44 than I've seen in a while.

+1 on the steel wool - if you start messing with the blue you won't like the way it turns out. That rifle doesn't need to be restored, just looked after.
