I'd like to get the stock repaired professionally. The large ugly screw really detracts from a beautiful piece. Any suggestions on where I might find a craftsman capable of doing this?

I wouldn't have the stock repaired. That stock is dreadful but the rest of the rifle is beautiful. I'd have it restocked or buy a semi-inlet from Brownells and do the work myself (which I did with my Husky M98).

This may be a stupid question but given its size could this rifle have been made for a woman or even a child to use?

No, its a full size rifle, made for civilians, thats the size they were, nothing small about it. With the stock being original a sympathetic repair would be nice, it may be hard due to the bolt, but a good gunsmith could do it.

That is a commercial sporting M96 . It came out of the factory as a sporting rifle. There are several clues - no date stamp on the top of the receiver and no thumb recess milled for the stripper clip. Also the lack of a serial number indicates a non military rifle.

The O.P. did not mention caliber- if it were a Swede it would be 6.5x 55, It is very likely 7x57 - Other cartridge chamberings are possible.

Unfortunately I've just totalled up what I spent on guns this year and the figure looks very similar to the US national debt. So, much as I like this piece I'm going to be listing it on CGN later today in the hope of keeping my bank manager at bay.
