This was donated to the BC Aviation Museum at the Victoria International Airport recently. I think I know what it is but would be interested in any info I can get.
I would be happy to give the best answer a free behind the scenes tour of the museum
It's a gun camera or its magazine. That would explain the the sighting notch. I could make out most of the label on the inner flange: THE WILLIAMSON MFG. CO. LTD. LONDON
That explains all the orientation studs on the case; for alignment and stabilty.
Found a gun camera magazine DATED 1953; same manufacturer:
WILLIAMSON MFG. CO. LTD.
LONDON & READING
As far as I can determine this fits on top of a Lewis gun in place of the pan magazine. Which makes it rather interesting as I was not aware that the Lewis was much used in WW2. I am guessing that it must have been used as part of the British Commonwealth Training program for training air gunners. I am not sure what kind of aircraft would have been used to mount such a thing.
For Vickers K gun? There is a front sight base for the K gun which sticks up a bit directly in front of the magazine. The camera lens assembly would have to be higher than this base.
In addition this would be a training gun camera for obvious rrasons.
ground use conversion just to show the location of the front sight bases.
