Mystery Shotgun Modification Riddle

Does it bleed of excess gas so that it can be used with loads heavier than target loads?
It appears to. I've used it with 28 gauge shells at 1,200 fps and 1,350 and it's worked with both.

I have a friend that is a machineist and he made these in the
70's for guy's. He says that the original he thought came from a guy that still has an ad in the back of the skeet review "Thomas Morton " ? State MD U.S.
He advertizes shell catchers ect. My friend is a very active skeet referee at registered shoots in Canada and U.S. He say's that lots of that item were in use at that time but were plaqued with fouling. As you said the only real invasive part of it was the drilling of the 2 holes in the mag. tube and the cap.

That's about all I got for info.

Thank's rocco. You are the first person I know of who has actually talked to someone who has made one of these units. This one is more recent however than the 70's. This unit would have been installed sometime in the mid 90's as the gun was made in 1994.

I can understand the fouling issue. After shooting a couple hundred rounds the unit was filthy inside and out. In any event this unit will become another oddity in my collection of unusual shooting stuff as I've had the mag tube holes welded shut returning the gun to the original configuration. This gun was bought primarily for teaching/loaning purposes and I'd rather it work normally.
