Hey. I love shooting, but don't do it much, and in no sort of structure at all. I have many things im curious about, so im gonna ask em all. All questions are in reference to Skeet/Trap/Sporting Clay Shooting. Also, All in Nova Scotia. Answer as many or as few as you'd like.

1. Whats the best shotgun sport to start with?
2. Where would a beginner go to shoot?
3. What is the best type of gun?
4. What does the sport cost for ammo, gun, range fees, and the like
5. Any age limits?
6. What courses and licences would I need?
7. Am I gonna need to join a club? Where would said club be.
8. Know any beginner websites I should read?

I think thats all, but I may have some later, and those will be added in Green

1. Trap. Easy game to learn, one shot at a time.
2. Just about any trap range. Ask at your nearest gun shop.
3. Any gun would work. Best choice would be a 12 gauge with a 28" or longer barrel and modified to full chokes. I started trap shooting with a Remington 870.
4. It varies. Ammo is around $5 per box, a round of trap can range from $3.50-$6.00 depending on where you are. Club rates depend on the club. In Ontario they start around $100 and go up from there.
5. As long as you have a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) you'll be fine. If you are under 18 you can get a minor's licence but most clubs will want an unaccompanied shooter to be 18 or older.
6. Possession and Acquisition Licence.
7. Perhaps. Some clubs permit non-members to shoot but joining a club is a good idea. Perhaps someone in your part of the country can recommend a club.
8. Can't help on this one. Maybe others have suggestions.

If your anywhere near Lunenburg, N.S. , we have a nice club with Sporting Clays, Trap and Skeet fields. Your welcome to come out any night that we are shooting and see what it's all about. We've just moved to Sundays for shooting from evenings.

I'm sure you'll get many answears and get you really confused on which gun to buy or which game to shoot.

I also started with trap as my first shotgun sport, and took to it naturally (probably because it's more like "rifle shooting" than other shotgunning). From that, I tried skeet for the longest time, but just couldn't hit anything because I couldn't figure out the leads, and it wasn't until I hit one or two by accident that something "clicked", and the instinctive "lead-meter" in my brain took over. For all-around fun, I think I genuinely prefer either skeet or sporting clays, just because of the movement, and the closeness of the targets (at least in some presentations). Shooting a riot gun in skeet can be a howl, because you can load up and call for "double-doubles" on each station, then it's a real challenge to reverse and make both pairs.

A little closer to home is "Dartmouth Trap & Skeet Club", in Cole Harbour on Cow Bay road, it's by Rainbow Haven beach. I believe the Bow Meadows Range, the other side of Beaver Bank, was also building a range for trap / skeet.

Then why can't I break them all, all the time.....:p ;)

All kidding aside this is a great game, a lifetime game to enjoy whether you compete or just shoot for fun.
