n00b Seeking an 8mm 98k!

Hello. I am a 19 year old living in Victoria, BC.
I am searching for a Mauser Kar 98k 8mm rifle, in firing condition. Also, hopefully in rather good cosmetic condition.

I have seen rifles on marstar.com, for around $400. I was ready to buy one, however, I was told about this site. So I registered, looked around, and in my stupidity, couldn't find anything.

Does anyone have, or know where I can find, this rifle for sale for a cheaper price, or in better quality than Marstar.com?

Apparently Marstar's stock is getting low, and I question the quality of the rifles that "nobody else wanted."

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, I do not have any sort of firearm license at this time, and I understand I would need one before I purchased this rifle. How much does it cost to get a license?

A little more information, I was a little hasty:
I'm not specifically looking for a ww2 issued rifle, as I understand that will run the price up greatly. Instead, I am seeking something that was made "around that time". i.e. I would rather have something that was a little old, than a rifle that was made 2 months ago.
But if the price difference is so great, I would probably favour the cheaper solution!

Marstar's good to deal with. If they still have K98's their not a bad deal. Concider the M48's once you get your licence.
 
Welcome! As mentioned, first thing you'll want to do is look around locally on who offers PAL courses. Take it as soon as you can.

There are K98's on here all the time, I think there are a few right now. A good route to go for you would be get a Yugo refurbed K98. They are WW2 German made but were refurbed after the war by the Yugoslavians. Also, as mentioned, M48's are a possibility as well in 8mm, although they are not German and are postwar built.
Nothing wrong with Marstar's stuff (K98's or M48's) and if you don't like it, you can always send it back with their guarantee.

I just finished my first year at College, and I'm looking to buy a condo in 2 or 3 years. I don't want to rent a single month of my life.
I was looking to get a job working in a mine this summer, but it seems I missed the boat. So now I'm stuck in my crappy job, working in a warehouse for the summer.
What I'm trying to say is: I'm not a brain surgeon. I don't get paid that much...and taking a sick day is easier said than done. :(

FWIW, Marstar still has like-new M48's. Their K98's are often somewhat mismatched and in G-VG from what they have left. You're better off getting a used one off the exchange if you want an actual K98, but the M48 will make a great shooter.

Also, P&S Militaria has a selection of slightly better German K98's (all refurbed), but they are a bit more money.
 
I would like to buy one off of the exchange, if at all possible. It seems the price is better for higher quality. And, I'd be helping someone who'd be looking to get rid of something they don't want anymore.
But I would not get an M48. It must be a German K98k. Must. I am a german fanatic, if you cannot tell already from my sig. ;)
 
Since you do not have a PAL, I would highly recommend you do not solicit for firearms in the EE or in this forum.

Your access to the EE and/or this site may be jeopardized by continuing to solicit for a rifle.

Having just checked P&S Militaria's stock in Yugo capture K98s, I am now left wondering: what is the real difference, if any, between rifles manufactured by Steyr-Daimler-Puch (in 1940), Gustloff Werke in Weimar and Mauser-Werke AG, Berlin (in 1943), Sauer und Sohn (in 1939 or 1943)? Quality? Collector value? Why would I pick one over the other, all else being equal?

Generally, all things being equal, the earlier K98's will have better fit and finish than the late war K98's due to wartime demands on industry. Early stuff has milled versus stamped parts in the late stuff. Accuracy wise, I don't think there are much differences between the two. Some collectors prefer late war stuff, others early. I like the late stuff myself.

If you are just looking for a shooter, manufacturer codes and year are secondary to bore condition and general overall condition of the rifle. The Yugo's, regardless of who built them and when, are generally great shooters. If you are looking for a collectible piece, any of them will do as all of them have been refurbed and contain at least some renumbered parts. To a hardcore collector, this limits their appeal. But if it is your first K98, might be still very collectible to you!!

then you are stuck with a refurb, or even a mismatched rifle. Nice K98's are NOT a poor man's game.
 
I don't really mind having mismatched serials...as long as the core rifle was made around the time of the war, I'll have sweet dreams for a while.

I suppose it's been a dream for a couple of years to own a Kar, and I'm finally deciding to do something about it.
