I want to mark the .223 brass that I uncrimped (or have shot already) and tried painting the headstamp with some of my wife's nail polish. In the process, I got a thin coat on the primers as well.

I've seen brass with nail polish survive being tumbled and I tried using a sharpie - but case lube took it right off.

Has anyone heard of any issue caused by painting thier brass - especially the primer?

I doubt there is any issue in using nail polish over primers. In fact, lots of guys (including me) use nail polish as a primer sealer, warding against rain/moisture creeping into the primer.

In my case, I have a few different colours of nail polish (including clear) so I can colour code my loads. When working up loads, I usually use a fine sharpie and write the grain load on the side of the brass after it is all loaded. For the nail polish, I usually just brush some on around the primer pocket, and then use a t-shirt rag and wipe across the head. This leaves a coloured ring of nail polish around the primer. In a couple minutes it is dry, and ready to shoot.

Lots of people put nail polish on the primer on purpose to seal it like military ammo. There is also a specific sealer sold for this. It will be fine.

I have started putting NP around the primer for the theoretical better seal for primers against moisture, as well as facilitating range pickups when people are shooting around me and we have to sort brass  Stole a few slutty pink colors from the gf precisely for that purpose
