BAT 3LL action
Banard P action.

My question is the Barnard has spec listed at 75mm for the port opening. Is this sufficient for a 284 win cartridge seated at over 3" OAL?

Both are close enough price..but Banard has a nice trigger included

Build:
284 win
F class stock.

Barnard P will work fine thats what my two 284 fclass rifles are built on action is built like a tank. Only thing you wont be able to do is extract a loaded round. But it takes 2 seconds to pull the bolt and pull the round that way. There isnt to many actions other if you go long action that you will be able to extract the round with.

Barn yard is nice and so is the Bat, the Bat should be melonited though for smoothness,

depending on it maybe the barn yard is easier to sell and I am a big fan of B. A.T. Machine

R theses available in Canada or R U waiting for the Bat to come. Jeff

The barnard PL is a beast not sure how much of a weight difference it is over the P but may be something to consider. If your just using it for fclass go no ejector. I hate having match prepped brass hitting the ground maybe thats just me.

The P with trigger is 49.595 oz
The PL with trigger is 52.699 oz
so 3.1 oz difference.

Also the P is 7.85" long and the PL is 8.464" long

When you're comparing them remember to think of the stock you're gonna drop it in. Have you made a choice on that? Going with a ready made, or ordering in? What bedding system? Using a Barnard V block?

If this is an itch to get shooting asap. I would lean to a model P as 99% chance hirsch even has a stock in inventory.

Then barrel, but for that you need to decide on a pill.

Hirsch is who I am dealing with.
Peter has been Awesome with helping me.
He has the P in stock.
The PL he says could be roughly 6 weeks.
As for stock...i really like the McMillan F class.

But I also like laminate...any suggestions?
No rush to shoot...winter project.

I would consider a BAT B unless you are dead set on a 3 lug action. BATS will let you run a jewell or Bix and andy trigger. Most of them are around 33oz. I have a VR with a jewell trigger and stainless rail that weighs 43oz. Weight wont be a big deal if you are shooting F open but if you wanted to try FTR later and just wanted to change barrels it is something to consider.

I have never personally used a Barnard but I know people that have them and like them. I would stay away from the V blocks a stress free bedding job will be better for accuracy.

50oz with trigger and no rail is pretty heavy. My rail is stainless steel and is an inch longer than my short action and weighs 6.53oz with mounting screws. So your going to be looking at 56oz for your action and trigger.

As far as stock goes if you want a fiberglass stock go with the Mcmillan Kestros it is the updated version of the F class stock. If wood or laminate look at Masterclass or PR&T. The Kestros has raised sides on the foreend to help with tracking and torquing in the bags.

If you go with a Barnard and need to save a little weight you could skip the straight contour and go with a heavy varmint. I have a straight contour for my 284 win barrel but it isn't necessary. If I were to do it again I would go with a heavy varmint and focus on tracking more so than max weight. The long range BR guys run the heavy varmints. I have light varmint and heavy palmas for my 308 barrels and haven't had any issues with the barrel getting to hot and not shooting well even with 20 shot strings.

Hope that helps.

Absolutely it helps
Everyone's opinion helps.
Thank you?
So then

I would tell you to go barnard just for the fact its alot easier to get parts for them then try to get anything for a Bat. Sometimes stuff just breaks doesnt matter how much you pay for it. I would also go borden rimrock before i went Bat. Also another option from hirsch.

I was looking at those Bordens as well

I went for the Barnard after a friend got one for F-class. Very impressed. Originally planned on using a different trigger but Peter at Hirsch recommended the Barnard and I'm glad I went that route. Excellent trigger.

Ok .. so I ordered the Banard P not PL
The PL is huge.
Now I wanna seat my loads long. Over 3"
I've seen data from shooters loading the 180gr VLD Hybrids as long as 3.4"
It's single shot action so will I have issues loading or extracting empty case?

I know I will have to remove bolt to extract live round. I'm ok with that.
