At Osoyoos, Parks Canada announced that a memorandum of understanding towards the creation of the park reserve had been signed between federal and provincial governments and local First Nations.

According to Parks Canada, the national park reserve will encompass 273 square kilometres in the Mount Kobau, Spotted Lake, Kilpoola areas of the South Okanagan and Similkameen, including BC Park’s South Okanagan Grasslands Protected Area.

Can you say Private Hunting Grounds?

A lot of the local landowners were (and are) VERY resistant to having their lands included. There are a myriad of reasons, but a lot focus on activities that Parks will deny within their eventual fences.

The BC Wildlife Federation was (and is) adamantly opposed: https://bcwf.bc.ca/initiatives/opposing-the-south-okanagan-national-park-reserve/

From what I have been able to determine, the local opposition actually outweighed support. Yet the Feds and Provincial governments, backed by the local FN's (realizing a Private Hunting Reserve after all) pushed it through anyway.

Majority of locals did not want this. Signs all over the south Okanagan 'NO NATIONAL PARK.'

I guess our rulers decided that the serfs don't have any opinion and just rolled it through. IMHO - All the public forums were just goat grabs for the Parks Canada employees and other Gov't flunkies and a good excuse to get out of the office for a road trip.

What a joke!

I have done horse trips in there. Nice country with very little use. We had to cut open the trail in a couple spots to get in. I know dad fought against the park, fishing in a couple lakes was great. I think parks is going to do more damage than the locals ever have. Sad to see it turn into yuppy land. May as well put a Starbucks by the red bridge, I guess that would double the local employment there.

I grew up in Oliver, I still live in the valley. Very few locals want it. It’s just a reconciliation gift to the Indians, they can still hunt there. Must be an election coming soon, the liberals are giving everything away to special interest groups.

Talking to the guys in Osoyoos i believe their gun club is within the proposed National Park boundaries. The province/Feds have not responded to queries about what happens to the club according to the club executives I spoke to.

Been going to Osoyoos every summer for like 6 years. Lots of NO PARK signs along highway 3, very few in favour.

In general I'm all for parks, not this one, seems to be a bad deal for everyone but the natives.

United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP)

There is something wrong when the UN gets involved but when the acronym gets separated . . . UN . . . DRIP . . . Trudeau . . . then everything starts to come into focus and that spells election.

It certainly sounds like a 3 party deal.
