Now i may be wrong but from what i have read 223 is the same as 5.56, also the 7.62 x 51 is the same as the 308. Are there any other rounds that match up?

Niether of the combos you've mentioned are 'the same'. Interchangable to a degree, but not the same. In a nutshell, it is a question of chamber/brass dimensions and pressure levels. a more detailed explanation should arrive shortly.

Its kind of like 87 octane gas from esso and 87 octane gas from chevron.....I have mixed and matched 556/223 762/308 for years out of assorted firearms with NARY an incident....Though some will no doubt say this type of 'recklessness' is best left for 'Chris Angel'

"Caster"

If you want drop me a 'PM' as I am heading to the range in a few days (Ridgedale Abbotsford) If you want I will gladly dismiss this 'wifes tale' In front of your eyes and you can then try it for yourself

They were the same and completely interchangeable before there was an Internet. Nothing about them has changed.
5.56mmx 45mm and 7.62mm x 51mm is a metric designation. 'NATO' is a specification. However, 6mm Remington and .244 Remington are the same. As are 8mm, 8mm Mauser, 8mm x 57mm. The list of like cartridges is very long. Most of it is marketing.

I'd venture that you never saw an old .223 rifle blow up with 5.56 surp, eh?

Both my .223 guns will safely shoot both .223 and 5.56 - but not all will.

BS.
