navy sight?

Norinco or North American? Either way you are probably stuck with prowling the EE. Marstar had them listed for the Norincos in stock a couple of weeks ago, but I notice they are now out of stock.
 
marstar has the titanium ones for the norcs but they are 175?? I just snagged the last one from valley gunsmithing today, and epps said that their distributor has none at the moment either...start hunting.. just not with the m14 as you have to sight :D

there is a new option for a front sight on the m14 that is a vast improvement over the navy sights. I call it the UFS or Ultimate front sight. What we do is fit and TIG weld a front sight dovetail directly to the gas assembly's forward ring. Your rifle ends up with a rock solid permanent platform for the standard m14 front sight to be installed to just as it does on the issue flash hider.
gas lock sights in general are prone to not aligning properly to index due to out of spec gas gas cylinders
gas locks sights also have a tendency to lose zero when gas plug is removed and reinstalled during cleaning processes.
they are great for a run and gun rifle where MOA accuracy is not important to the operator.
the UFS solves all these issues and my clients seem to be extremely impressed with them.
The UFS mod is 125.00 reg or 90.00 when booked with a shorty package and I must have your barrelled action , gas assembly and front sight for the modification

Can't agree with the Doc enough on this subject. After spending lotz & lotz of money on navy sight's, gas lock mount's and other type of "Great Idea's" I got this done to 1 of my shorties and have been cursing him ever since. With all the money I wasted I could have atleast baught a new rifle by the time I found this awsome set-up. Ah well atleast I have been laughing ever since.

Do you have any other pics of the setup. A pic where you can see the whole end of the barrel would be great if possible. Sounds like an interesting option.
 
my dial up does not afford me to post pics very easily..... satain and rugerman have both put up pics of thier UFS equiped shorties in various threads..... i think rugerman made his comments in a thread he posted about the mods he had done at my shop.... some good pics and comments.
try a search of threads started by rugerman and you will find more pics. I'll try and find it and copy it to here

Shorty Barrel: Might be some velocity loss but no accuracy loss on this gun. Also note the high front sight.

The second set of pics shows it really well. Thanks for posting those. That setup actually looks quite nice. how do you deturmine how high to leave the sight base before welding it on?

a lot of trial and error in the beginning with several chinese gas assemblies was required to find the happy medium..... approximately. Because of this it's a mod that unfortunately, and only due to tolerance and machining variances in chinese cylinders, must be performed with the barrelled action at hand. esentially each and every one of these UFS mods is custom tailored to the rifle it is to be used on.

If i were to be running a usgi or similar , bang on spec barrel and the same quality of gas cylinder, I would use what H2O man has shown us pics of, a smith enterprise gas lock dovetail or navy sight would indeed be an option i would happily install on my rifle rather than weld up a UFS on a quality usgi cylinder. However, due to common dimensional variances and axial alignment variances with chinese gas cylinders.... it has been my experience that any kind of gas lock sight on the chinese rifles is a hit and miss proposition. They work and index well on some rifles, but not on others...... for lack of a better option for front sights on the 1/2 x 28 threaded Shorty mods we do up here in Canada, the Ultimate Front Sight Solution (UFS) was born...... and seems to be just the ticket for solving the "what do i do for a front sight when i chop my barrel" question
