Are these red dots any good for quick target acquisition? How is the battery life? I am thinking of mounting one on a weaver gas system cover for a SKS. Any other recommendations? I like iron sights for SKS' but a red dot may be nice........

TIA

This is the main reason why I made this mount because I love were the rear leaf spring was situtated and wish I could just put this NC Star red dot right there.

Although I found this rail to long so I chopped it back;

Now it works perfectly for me with this red dot!

Got a Burris Fastfire II fixed red dot, the same thing you are looking at
mounted to a Marlin 30-30, well it used to be :D now it's just my fun gun.

Red dot looks like this.....but bigger when you're closer to it.

Have a look around and find the crispest dot you can get, ask that question, how crisp is that red dot? It matters. The Burris is the only one I've fired so there may be better ;)

Extremely quick acquisition of targets is what these are all about.
Notice in the down the line picture you can clearly see outside the sight. If there is any movement on your left or right side you'll see it.
Looking through a zoom scope restricts your field of view.

You can get on target super quick and track a target with 140 degree field of view.....bottom line, it's just like a video game.

Accuracy at:

50 yrds - Superb.
100 yrds - Very nice
150 yrds - Good
200 yrds - Adequate (starts to loose out as the dot becomes 1/2 the size of the target. Can get torso grouping with a very rare bull)
300+ yrds - Spray and prey (it's a fkn craps game. 50/50 of hitting the target. The point quickly becomes to just hit the target...period)

Fit and finish is superb, mounted to a weaver, slick, no problems.
Has never come loose and must have sent close to 5000 rounds through her in the year I've had it on.

Battery life is....don't know. I've never changed it and it gets used a lot. I've left it on for weeks by accident, but still it goes. I've heard they can go for years. Comes with a replacement battery as well.

It's calling card is 50-150 yrds.
Within that yardage it's unbeatable for rapid fire and ultra quick target allocation.

Hope that helps before you dole out you're hard earned cheddar:cheers:.

I bought a paintball gun with an ncstar on it. I tossed it on the xcr just to see what it was like. My nc has too much loosness to it to even bother shooting with it period, however it could be usefull if one were to need to shoot with poor lighting up to mabey 75y on newspaper size targets with little time for aiming. The light is also too bright on it's lowest setting, the image is not crisp, rotating the drum for different reticles also
changes the position of the dot. It's a total turd.....but......

Go with a mount like the one Satian has shown.

The gas tube mounts from NCstar aren't that stable and will not hold zero after heating up a bit. And they need to be fitted by filing some material off. And id your take off to much they become useless as mounts. The last two I bought for my last SKS were crap. The inner diameter of the gas tube was larger than the outer diameter of the gas piston allowing the flow to go around the piston and would not cycle the rifle.

Thanks for the input. I will look at the Burris red dots instead of NC Star, you sold me on the Fast Fire.

I will also look at mounts like Satain put on his rifle for the Burris.
