Hi there

I do plan on buying something along the lines of a vortex for my newly acquired AR15/M4. Until I can actually lay out more cash, I was looking at buying a cheap starter optic to hold me over. I have seen many $60-100 NCStar optics advertised online. Do you have any experience with them? Are they worth buying?

Thanks

I would stay away from NcStar if possible. Use your irons until you can afford a good optic. Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 is a pretty good one.

If you AR already has irons…like others above have mentioned….use them until you save up for a "good" optic. Do you want a variable (1x-4), red dot, fixed, etc.
I fondled a Vortex Sparc II 2MOA today and it looked pretty nice for ~$220. Even came with a couple different mounts depending on your height requirements.
I think the NC Star will disappoint you in the end...

Master the irons while saving up for a real optic

This.

Don't buy a crappy optic to hold you over...you'll just frustrate the crap out of yourself trying to make your "temporary" optic work for you. Sharpen your skills with your iron sights, then when you can put a good optic on your rifle, do it.

I'm in the same boat with my M4V5. I want to put a 1-4x optic on it, but the one that I want is gonna cost me about $1000, not including the ADM mount that I would like to use. That will probably be another $200. I can't afford the complete package at the moment, so until then, I'm relying solely on irons...and I must say, I'm getting better and better shooting with them every time I take the rifle with me to the range...even out to 100 meters.

I had the p4 3x9 ,cost me about $180'.used it on a.22 for about 20 mins and then sold it to a guy at the range for $70. If you take out the lens and make a reticle out of thread,it would improve this optic:)

I have an NC Star complete with a red dot for 25 yds. Have a had it for a year, finally got it tunes up (apparently when adjusting the red dot the UP Arrow actually meant down) ... and the Left Arrow actually means right ... Who knew.

I finally got it where I needed it, and went to the range to fine tune it and guess what, wow not even close to the paper. I am going to give it one more try as its perfect concept for my AR .... after that its going away ... bottom of a lake maybe ...

Do your research before you buy.

i would never put nc star on only of my guns as far as red dots bushnell trs25, sparc and scopes red field, bushnell has the new ar line 1-4 , vortex crossfire 1-4, leupod hog 1-4 but id personally rather shoot irons and put the extra 100 away until you are ready to buy a proper optic

Yea its funny i would never buy a ncstar scope personally , but my best friend put one on his sks and we put over a crate of ammo through it so far, no issues and its quite accurate too.

He hasn't fiddled with it however since it was sighted in so this is no indication of how much you can adjust and readjust the scope if say swapping it to a different rifle.

But on a basic compact scope their really is no need to change anything once its setup @ 100m either.

I guess some people get lucky . its a fixed 4 , pretty sure its this one MODEL #SC430B not alot to go wrong in a fixed power scope so i cant see why it would ever fail with low recoiling 7.62x39.

Get yourself a bushnell trs-25 red dot for now if you want something to throw on there, when you buy the vortex you'll still have a solid red dot to throw on something else instead of a smoking pile of low grade nc star junk. It's a buy once cry once type deal, that doesn't mean you have to spend a crap ton of money on everything you buy though. There are great value optics out there and the Trs-25 is one of them.

Can't go wrong with TRS25 for the $120.00. NCstar is junk.

I bought an nc star red dot from a vendor here. $90 all in, lasted 60 rounds before a set screw backed out, which is what held the battery cover down. After it was tightened, the red dot went away or was blurry. Took the cover off and one of the "baby hair" wires was broken off and unable to fix. No I didn't return it, threw it in the garbage and vowed never to buy another. It was mounted on my DA556.
Having some trouble now with a barska red dot from cabelas. Rear of mount moves slightly side to side on the rail but is holding zero so far at 60 yards.

I bought one of the NC Star 3-9 short scopes to try on an SKS. I wanted something short with mag to avoid the ejected rounds from killing the scope. It was short alright - short on build quality, short on performance and short on life span, lasted maybe 500 rounds before things started to fall off it. Piece of junk. Stay away.

I put a Vortex sparc2 on an AR a few weeks back and it's working quite nicely for the money, plus the vortex warranty is supposed to be quite good. Have you looked at the bushnell AR223 scopes? I've fondled one and it seemed to be decent quality for a bushnell. IIRC the 1-4 is reasonably priced.
