I just tried out a see-through Weaver rail and 42mm BSA Red Dot on my 10/22 today, and while it works great, the height is too much for the little screws that hold the rail on to the aluminum receiver.
Too much torque is applied on those little bolts on the soft aluminum receiver from the weight of the scope and by little bumps during transport to hold the setup secure. When I got home from the range, there was play between the rail and receiver, and I took it off for fear of stripping the bolt holes on my receiver. I guess I'll just use the factory rail from now on...thought I'd put up my experience just in case someone else was thinking about doing this.
