I received a nice present in the mail today, a 12" 300 Blackout barrel from NEA. I had enough miscellaneous parts lying around to build it into an entire rifle. The majority of the big parts are NEA including the barrel, forend, lower and buffer extension.

The upper receiver is a Colt part. I do have a couple of NEA uppers but they are already assembled into complete uppers and I wasn't about to tear those apart. Actually the Colt upper on this makes a nice point in that it fit perfectly and matches the NEA parts nicely.

The muzzle device is an old 3-flute SPEX test model I had lying around. It only took a bit of work to convert it over for use on the larger caliber and I am happy to give it a new home.

Let's go test it this weekend :)
I got the rest of my parts in the mail today so I'll be able to put the 6.5" together and take it for a test run as well :D

It is a 1:8. The bbl is a lighter profile than mine so it weighs less than my 10".

Your upper is almost set up. Once it is set up the job is 2 minutes.

I am gonna test it with a conventional buffer and recoil spring. Normally I run my 300 BLK with a captive spring buffer system which allows spring weight to be tuned.

The thing with running subsonics is there are all kinds of variants that can be run. SA BCG or FA BCG. I have an adjustable gas block as well.

Is that barrel one of the newer finish or the same ARC+?

Are those JP captured springs THAT much smoother than the traditional buffer and spring other than no more "TWANG" noise?

This barrel does not have the new black finish.

I made my own version of the JP captive spring system. It is quite smooth, totally eliminates the noise of the spring and allows tuning spring weight by swapping out springs cheaply and easily. I can also tune the buffer weight to work with the gas block and the spring rate. All things that appeal to me.

How does the profile compare to my 300 barrel for the ACR?
Might have to pick one of those barrels up when I get tired of the 6.5" ;)

Cool. Humm, I might have to splurge on get one of those JP units to try out since I can't make my own like you. lol
 
Quicky range session just to see if this setup works with my ammo ..... AND IT DOES! :D I was gonna try it with factory supersonics but I can't find any ammo anywhere in Calgary which really sucks.

The rifle cycled and ejected my 150gr subsonics flawlessly so I am pretty happy about that. I don't have any sights to put on this thing at the moment so will have to wait to try it for accuracy.
 
Good stuff. What load are you using for 150gr subs? I tried shooting some factory Hornady 208gr subs and they won't cycle my bolt. Then again, you have WAY more adjustment options on your rifle.

The load is 9.8gr W296. That seems to work all my rifles.

My 10" AR certainly has a lot of adjustment options but this NEA rifle is running essentially OEM. It has a standard buffer and carbine spring and I had the gas block fully open so that it would be limited only by the size of the gas port in the bbl. On the 10" rifle I run a SA carrier because it weighs less but the NEA rifle cycled fine with a FA carrier.
 
Thanks for the load info. Good to know it's running on stock with no issues. Might have to pickup a pound of W296 to try it out. :)

Shameless bump for any accuracy / range day updates.

Waiting for Daniel Defense barrels to come back in stock at Wolverine but I'm tempted to try an NEA barrel if the 300 blk itch gets stronger.
