what is meant by "checking head space" and how do you correct it if its not *right*? i have a dpms oracle and if its not a simple drop in and replace i can't figure it out
The head space is (in the case of a rifle round) the distance from the bolt face, to the shoulder of the chamber. This is what determines if your chamber is too far forward, too far back, or just right (to spec)
You can get gauges that will tell you if your chamber/bolt combination is good to go or not (called the Go and No-Go gauges). They are really handy when you build rifles somewhat regularly.
Now with an AR15, 99% of bolts will work with 99% of barrels, so it's just covering your back as far as the manufacturer is concerned. There should be a gunsmith in your area that can help you out...
