NEA Front Sight Base?

Hey all,

I'm thinking about getting into the AR world in the near future and need some info. I've settled on a 14.5" NEA-15 with a 9" rail for reasons that are my own and not really relavent. I want to affix an "F" marked FSB. Is this possible for this barrel? I realize I'll have to ditch the low-pro gas block but will I need a longer gas tube to do so, such as a mid-length tube as opposed to the carbine length that I assume is on it from the factory? It doesn't look too complicated, but I'm just not that familiar with the AR and I haven't seen anyone else install one on CGN...maybe because you can't?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

That won't work. The gas port in the barrel wouldn't line up with the FSB if you put it ahead of the 9" rail.

You'd need to go with a 7" carbine rail in order to install a fixed FSB. Or just clamp on a fixed FSB ahead of the rail and leave the original gas system intact.

You could go with a rail that has a cut out for a fsp but is a longer rail.

Kind of thought that might be the case. So you mean just pin or bolt on a non-functional FSB for the use of the sight only? How would you make sure it's aligned correctly?

Starting to think that I should just get the 12" rail and bolt a picatinny front post sight on instead...big difference between 9 and 12 though as far as balance and whatnot.

It's not really "non-functional", you just wouldn't be using it as a gas block. You can align it by using a string, the rear sight and the rail.

Unless you're wedded to the idea of the traditional front sight look, why not just attach a fixed front BUIS to the rail? With a 9" handguard, your front sight will be in pretty much the same place as a fixed FSB on a carbine-length gas sytem.

Here's a pic of a 10.5" NEA with Troy fixed sights and the 9" rail to give you an idea what that would look like.

I was checking out OST's site and they have what looks to be a pretty good package deal on DD front and rear non folding sights. I'll probably go that way, I was just hoping to get as much sight radius as possible but I'm sure the difference will be negligible.

Thanks for the info, always informative.

I know you said you're decided on the 9", but if sight radius is the big factor, why not the 11"?

The DD sights are nice. Pictured here on a 14.5" with Samson rail:

As far as I can tell the NEA-15's only come with 9 and 12" rails, don't they? I really don't want to drop that kind of coin on a rifle, mags, sights and ammo and then spend another $3-400 on a rail...although that last pic you posted looks exactly like what I want my finished product to be.

The 12" NEA rail wouldn't look much different from that.

Or buy it with the 12", sell the OEM rail and put a different length on. That Samson 11" rail was under $200 so you should be able to pretty much break even on the rail swap.
