Hi all,

Anyone using the NEA Hybrid muzzle break for the VZ58 have problems with it unthreading and falling off during firing??
Mine does this evertime after about 10-15 rounds down the pipe.

My theory is the muzzle break looks to have the "vortex" slots twisting left causing the gas pressure to torque the muzzle break in a counterclockwise rotation and because the thread is a right handed thread it just unscrews itself. It seems this is done at such force, the break has peened over the locking indent for the muzzle break lock pin. I even tighened the break as much as I could onto the barrel and cut another locking indent into the break, but it still unscrews.
I would like to hear if anyone else as run into this and what their solution is.

Thanks,
Peter

Design flaw.

I have had one fall off of my AR 3 times now.

The vortex is good at countering the rotation force of the bolt, but in doing so does indeed spin it off the barrel.

I have mine on with red loctite now. Next time it falls off I'm just leaving it on the ground.

Thankfully, I didn't pay for mine.

Ahah! Design flaw; that's what I figured too!
Unfortunately, I paid full price for mine. I really do not want to put loctite on it though....

NEA did three versions of the Hybrid and for some reason changed the angle of the slots on the third. Is yours the phospated steel 3rd version?

The second model in black oxide on stainless has the correct angles and it gets tighter as you shoot. Just like a Smith Vortex on an AR.

Yup, mines the phosphated version.
3 versions heh? It would be interesting to know why they changed version 3? Did they even test it before releasing it into production??

Here's a picture of mine.

And one of the locking pin slot which has been peened over by the locking pin cause by the rotational force of the muzzle break.

If its mild steel you could weld and recut the slot then harden it with some hardening compound. Maybe build it up a little thicker for more surface area engageing the pin. Dunno if it would work, just throwing ideas around.

I've got one that looks just like that that. I wouldn't be surprised if they just got the drawing reversed.

I don't think there's a good solution to fix the issue.

What length barrel is your VZ? IIRC, mine stayed put on a 18.5" 858 but came off pretty quick on my 12" CSA.

Yup, mine's the 12" CSA also; it unthreads in about 10 to 15 rounds.
Would be nice to see NEA CS offer a refund for their flawed design....

Not worth the time and effort IMO. I guess I'll just buy a break that actually works.
Can anyone recommend a good muzzle break for the VZ? No krinks or AK clones though.

1500 rds through mine, no issues at all. Black high gloss finish on mine, not sure what model it is. Works fine.

From Stevo's description looks like you have the early version that worked. If you compare the vortex slots on yours to mine in the picture, you will notice your slots twist the opposite way.

Cheers,
Peter

Mark,

I'm not sure. Regardless, if the force is so great that the rotation can peen over the locking slot, I don't think a jam nut will cut it.

Cheers,
Peter

Is the brake screwed on tight up against a shoulder, then the pin set or is it loose and relying only on the pin to stop rotation? If it is loose and the pin is the only thing stopping rotation then I think a jam nut would work better than the pin. If it is tight against a good shoulder plus the pin, then the jam nut will be no help to you.

Hi Mark,

When it first happened that's what I suspected also, so I threaded it tight onto the barrel and then cut out a new pin slot to lock it in. Even tighened to the barrel and with the new slot it still unthreads.

I really just wanted to see if anyone else had run into the same issue. I'm just going to buy a different brake and be done with this one.

Cheers,
Peter
