I got my hands on the new NEA lower handguard today and ran it through a bit.

Like the upper it`s milled beautifully and you can really see the quality of design and machining that Jeff has at hand. It`s super light and has the same coating as the upper. The coat seems to be a little thin but I`m told that that`s being addressed. Since like everything else I own it was getting painted anyways, no problem here.

Installation was a interesting process as this lower is TIGHT.. I had to tap it in place with a rubber mallet. It came with a roll pin for the receiver, but I`m pretty sure that it`d hold there without it it fits that tight. It feels very solid when mounted, more so than any other lower I`ve seen yet.

It`s hard to explain the ergonomics of the lower. It`s square at the rear yet triangular at the front due to the rail. It rests really well on a bag or shelf and is comfortable off-hand once you get used to it. With the rail not melding into the body but rather tapering off, you get a familiar point to reindex your front grip on when transiting or on mag changes.

I did a ammo dump on this to see how the upper and lower handled the heat and I was surprised how cool it remained. Granted it`s fairly cool outside right now..

The downside for me was the lack of side rails, so I installed a set I had laying around.

Again.. I like it. NEA has another winner. I don`t know if I`m happier that someone is making good quality, available VZ parts.. or that it`s a Canadian company doing it.

Nice write-up, thanks. Can't wait to get mine!

How did you attach the rail pieces to the sides? Did you have to drill/tap the lower? Looks like it is lower profile than the prototypes with the integrated side rails...

Yes, drilled & tapped. The rails I used are only 3/8" thick. I went with a low profile rail to reduce the chance of snagging on my gear.

Don't suppose you took a picture of the handguards on the rifle before you installed the side rails? Just curious as what they look like without themb

Yeah i just received my lower in the mail yesterday.First thoughts.. the actual machining of the lower is very well done,i love the look of the upper and lower together,i think it makes something very common(cz858) ,look unique.I havent got a chance to get to the range yet,but to me it looks like this will be a winner. The only problem i have with this piece of gear is the finish,it looks almost like a cross between spray paint and powder coat(if that makes sense)Now to be fair the way i understood it this was supposed to be a ''tester'' batch and that feedback from these would be used in determining the final version. That being said the finish (atleast in my lower) really isnt all that great,it doesnt match the gen 3 upper i have at all,and since i wasnt planning on painting my 858 i could see it being a problem for OCD freaks like me.If your not a little girl and can handle multi colored cz858 parts or have that thing called patience and can wait for the ''final'' version then this IMO is the best lower rail on the market for the 858.

PS.my retention pin broke/bent when trying to install it,but to be fair i think that may of been my own dumbass fault.

The lower's finish is mil spec anodize over top of a light grit blast as per Colt Canada spec. The finish on the discontinued gen three upper is the same anodize but it was not grit blasted prior to anodize which is why it has a glossy finish. The Gen 4 uppers are finished in the same way as the lower.
