I figured this would be the place to ask this.

Any of you guys run rings and bases from Near Mfg. in Camrose? Good quality stuff? What's the owner like to deal with?

From what I read and been told ,Richard Near's products are top notch and on par (or if not better) then offerings from Badger Ordnance and similar manufacturers.

I currently have a custom 30 MOA taper Picatinney base on order From Near through V-Bull Precision.

I will let you know my impressions when I recieve and install it.

SKBY.

I had a Near 25moa base on my Stealth, top quality stuff. He was easy to deal with and was going to send me a stainless base to use until he had some blued ones in stock which I thought was pretty nice.:)

Near is great quality, I bought a base from him back when he did not even really advertise, but he is not cheap. In the same class a Badger Ordnance or Leupold Mark 4. IMHO, TPS is the way to go, top quality product and a very good price.

Have several of Nears Bases quaility is Top Shelf great guy to deal with if you want the best Bases on the market then Near is the way to go. Btw Richard Near's idea of returning to Zero when you remove and reinstall your scope is not 4moa as some figure but a return to absolute zero nothing less

I have bought Near, Badger, TPS, & Farrel bases. Every rifle I ever thought of selling had a near base taken off and the other above mentioned bases put on, when I sold them. Near bases in my opinion are a slight cut above the others mentioned. Near as previously mentioned is also a Canadian. I would also rate the above mentioned bases in the order given. After trying these four I will from now on buy only Near or TPS. TPS only if the funds for the required build are running tight. I found that the Near bases design, fit, finish and quality are the factors that set them above the rest. Plus the fact that Richard Near will make you what ever MOA you wish. His customer service is also quite exemplary. However for the money the TPS bases get the job done and are not quite half the price. Far as rings go I have never purchased Richard Near’s scope rings. Last time I talked to him he told me he prefers not to finish them in black. Far as I’m concerned that is the only finish I would want, therefore I never tried them out. I have tried Leupold, Badger and TPS rings. Unfortunately I bought the TPS rings last and feel I wasted a bunch of money buying any thing else but the TPS rings. TPS makes some really nice rings for the dollar. I hope this may help you decide. Shoot straight.

I was looking at a near base and what the heck rings aswell to kill two birds with one stone. He dicked me around to have one made for my rem 700 in LH, and thats all I needed to hear. Went to Tps they gave me the run around about material and making one in LH. Badger was the only option in a one piece base in left hand with any taper (20moa) for my rem 700. I work in the cnc industry and know what its all about. No skin off their ass to run it off. I would have bought tps rings however but the place I made the order for the badger base did not stock tps so badger I went. As far as quality your going to have to ask Richard what his tolarances are to truly know the quality of his product.

I have a Near 20 moa base for my lefty Remington 700. With none pre-made samples in stock, Richard turned it around (delivered to my door) just outside of 5 business days.
Well worth the money and I'm glad I'm supporting a Canadian Craftsman.

I can say I see no difference in quality between Near and TPS. Having said that, TPS offers the bang for the money. From my review and IMHO, Near products are "grossly" over priced. However you do get a truly Canadian Product. In the end, thankfully we can purchase whatever we like. Thankfully we have a wide selection of product.

let me guess...what you don't sell:D

I have both....and I would say the Near is better(more contact with scope ) IMHO ...but a hell of alot more money too

The design of a base is very simple. The rings a close second. The shear load capcity of a full cross slot is higher and cheaper to make, but is it required.

To be honest Jamie, it has nothing to do with what I sell. We have offered to carry "some" of Richard's products but he doesn't want to support Canadian dealers. I also sell Warne and Farrell Tactical bases but only in offerings TPS does not offer.

As I stated before, thankfully we many choices.

I had a bad experience with Near and went with Ken Farrell instead. Kinda hard to endorse a guy that tells you "I don't have time to answer your questions I'm really busy. Just go to the website." when you call up, Visa in hand.

Ken Farrell, on the other hand, was more than willing to answer the few questions I had and point me in the direction of the base I needed.

Richard made his first 20MOA base for the WIn Stealth II for me (It is NOT the same as other Win bases: hole spacing like WSM). It is rock solid and top notch. Not to mention Richard has great service and is really good to talk to as well!
