Makes sense, they would have had access to G43, SVT, And Bren. The Garand action would have been copy written so this was they way to go.

It looks more like a FN-49 to me, the main difference being the detachable magazine.

Know a guy who has one but missing the magazine. Pretty sad shape but could be brought back. The mag however would be a big problem.
