I do have books coming on precision rifles but I have questions on actions. On gophers out at 500 yards what is the difference between a stock Remington 700 police action and others I have seen for up to $1650.00? I was planing to build my rifle a bit at a time as I had the money. But I have found used Remington 700 police for around $750.00 to $900.00 . Would it be better to buy the used 700 and change the barrel out later? Used actions seam to be as much money as a used rifle. I would rather spend my money on a good barrel and a better scope. If I'm barking up the wrong tree please say so.
thanks

really depends on wether the action has been trued and what trigger is installed. Off the shelf remington plus 300.oo for a trigger plus 300.oo for action tuning and add 460.oo for a barrel, then go look for a stock.

welcome to the club

Half of the equation is learning how to shoot as accurately as the rifle you're holding. If you're not an experienced shooter, buy a used rig and spend the money saved on practicing, and even reloading, if you are not already doing so.

The absolute most important contributor to rifle accuracy is a good barrel. Without a doubt, one of the best actions on which to incrementally build a custom rifle is a Remington 700. There are no structural differences between the 700 SPS and the Sendero, just cosmetics.

Buying an affordable Remington and then upgrading the barrel sonner/later is a superb way to get your foot in the door with a true precision-capable rifle.

X2 with obtuned. For the type of shooting(gophers at 500yds)your planning, I think the action is the last place to spend money . I think its best to spend money on a good barrel first, then, good optics, good stock, and a good trigger . I rebarreled a .308 700LTR last year. It would barely shoot MOA with HS HTR adjustable stock, jewel HVR trigger, Mark 4 6-20 TMR scope and factor barrel. I put a Mac Lennan HV barrel in .243Win on and it consistently shoots in the .3's with handloads and under .5 with factory ammo, without a bedding job, or trueing the action. Money well spent.

I think that the Rem 700 is an excellent platform to start a build on as there are so many aftermarket goodies available.

I think "you are barking up the right tree" peterl

If I was bulding a golpher rifle, iwould buy a single shot target rifle. They are available a good prices and come with excellent stiff actions (no big hole in the bottom) and solid bedding (no big hole in the bottom) and good triggers.

All you would have to add is a set of bases and a good scope. After the 308 barrel is worn out (155 bullets will work very, very well to 500 yards) and then it could be replaced with a 243 or 260 Rem.

For example, you could buy a Remington 40X in a McMillan stock with a 30" Kreiger barrel for $1,000. It would cost over $2,000 to duplicate that.

My friend, If you know where I can find one at that price, please drop me a line!:D

I would also suggest that to build that combo today would cost you closer to 5 grand when the dust settles.
