After pulling bullets from live cartridges, should I be re neck sizing to get neck tension back to square one?
Also, is there a way to set the die up without the decapping pin?
I can't get it out and don't want to snap it off.
Thanks
Rob

I just went through this last week myself, there is a recent thread.
I had some primed brass sent to me that had had the bullets pulled.

Basically, you need to remove the decapping pin, or adjust it up so it does not decap.
I did, and it works like a charm.

Take the whole decapping Rod out that the pin attached to.

What make and model of die do you have?

I have a few f/l sizing dies and one lee neck sizing die.
I tried moving the decapping rod up but it doesn't engage the expander ball. I might order an extra rod and grind off the decapping pin. Then I'm set for this situation. Over 80 pieces of prepped and primed .22-250 brass I'd hate to have to reprime it.

I never resize the neck after pulling a bullet unless it is precision ammo or the round is loose in the neck for some reason.

The brass should have enough tension to hold the bullet again and only really loses it when fired and pressures go up.

Not sure if I should admit to this but here goes.
I've removed many live primers and I've never heard one go off. NEVER. I'm not telling you to do it. Just saying...
I'm pretty sure I've reloaded brass without sizing the neck and it held. But I like to size the neck.

Like thatmikeguy I've deprimed A LOT of live primers and reused them. If the anvil falls out, chuck the primer, otherwise, it's fine for plinking ammo.

  • If you have the Lee Collet neck sizing die, you should be able to move the central rod any place you like, as it is of uniform diameter for it's whole length (other than the pin, of course).
  • If you have a Redding neck-bushing die, just take the decapping rod out and use a bushing 0.001 larger to make up for not pulling the button through.
  • If you have a Lyman or RCBS neck die, unscrew the button from the decapping rod and take the pin out (maybe that's the problem? Did you take the button off the rod?) then screw the button back on.
(If he has a Lyman carbide button kit it works just like the regular decapping rod, even if it looks a bit different.)

Did I leave anything out?

(If he has a Bonanza die set, I'll have to dig mine out to see how it goes together, because I can't remember

I'll monkey around with moving the rod up with the lee neck die. I didn't feel any resistance when I moved it up to take the pin out of the equation.... now that I'm thinking on it perhaps the neck just didn't need to be resized.
