Going to be reloading some sierra 77g smk's for my ar build and was curious what you all are running for neck tension? Is .002 enough? Dont like the idea of crimping a bullet without a cannelure.

Thanks

I am about to load the same projectiles for my 223 wylde SLR. I dont plan on crimping since most everyone says not to. Although I will still check a few for setback because I am anal and like my fingers.
I am just using Lee 223 dies so I'll get whatever neck tension it gives me but I have never had an issue getting quality ammo that shoots in my 308 or 243. When I have a choice in neck tension I usually go 0.002 but that's in my bench guns, this is my first time loading for a semi so I am curious as to what others have to say also.

I've crimped thousands of 77 SMKs without canalure for precision loads for the AR with no detriment to accuracy. In fact, I prefer to crimp them and use a Lee factory crimp die. If you keep it on the light side the deformation to the bullet is minimal and less than that imparted by the rifling.

Below .003 neck tension and the .226 step aids in straight inline seating. My RCBS .223/5.56 small base die set has a taper crimp.
