Necking up a 300 mag to 416?

I fire-form .300 Win to .458 Win Mag using the cream of wheat method and 10 grains of Unique and trim. Which .416 are you trying to make? The .416 Rem would take .300 Weatherby or 8mm Rem mag. If you're seeking to invent something be assured that everything has already been done.

There is already a very similar cartridge. It is the 300 Win necked up to take .423 cal bullets from the 404 Jefferies. It is called the 425 express.

Why would you neck up the 300WM with it's short neck? Sure you get a bit more capacity but a .27" neck is shorter than optimal for a 416" bullet. The .345" neck of the Taylor is a better fit. If I didn't already have a Rigby I'd build a Taylor. Dead simple rebarrel job

Yes, i have a good number of the Rum family of calibers. Since one can only push so much through a tiny hole....257 Rum or smaller without the already horrific throat wear of Rum cartridges becoming stupid. I thought too instead neck the 375 Rum to 416 Rum. Such of course do exist, reamers are not too expensive. However, even with just a re barrel to a existing Rum rifle, and buying a reamer....one is already at a minimum of 1.5X the cost of picking up a completely different rifle in a existing 416. By doing that one has cash in pocket(lets be serious...cash for ammo) and two rifles instead of one.

So why do it then. Obvious, because we are Gunnutz and we can.
