While I just picked up a bolt action 30-30, being a bolt action I can load pointed bullets, but my book doesn't list any loads for 130gr bullets which look like they will work and I have an abundance of, powder at the moment is limited to rl15 varget and blc2, I also have some 180gr round nose bullets that would work well but the largest calibre it seems to go up to is 170gr, anyone have any experience loading heavier?

With regards to varget and blc2 hodgdons website has lots of data,

No 180gr data, but I would look at the charges for the lower weights and figure out a starting point for a 180gr bullet. Of course do that at your own risk.

Due to the magazine , overall lengths have to be within
Spec. To load a 180 spitzer on a 30-30
Is not feasable , Gould never get any velocity

The old Lyman manual has data for a 190gr like the one that was standard in .303 Savage. Like Mbogo said, I'm a cast bullet shooter, and have had no trouble at all with bullets up to 225gr. Just check your magazine length, or load single shot.

In Sam Fadala's great book "Winchester's .30-30, Model 94" he lists loads for 180 gr bullets (pulled from .307 Winchester cases). He used 29 grs of IMR 4064.

I like Hodgdon's BL-C(2) or H-380 for standard loads and Hodgdon's Trail Boss for reduced cast boolit loads. Go by the book and work up for your rifle. If no chronograph, I find all starting loads in the 30-30 are quite satisfactory for velocity and accuracy.

Lyman 46 edition (1982) lists:
170gr jacketed flat nose bullet
Cartridge max OAL 2.540"
BL-C2 27.0gr (1869fps) to 30.5gr (2128fps)
I'd start maybe a grain or so lower with the 170 grain data and go from there.
The data helps, I don't have any newer books so that's the only data I can find with the above powders.

Oh, and as Zanelike says, Barnes makes a 30-30 TSX just for tubular magazine rifles. I hunt with this round and the data, as noted above, is on the Barnes site.

Load whatever you like in the chamber for your first shot, then go to whatever flat nose bullet you choose for your tubular magazine. The Barnes TSX 150 grain flat nose (30 caliber part #30820) are the best hunting bullets in this chambering by far IMO.
