i am looking for advice on a spotting scope. i am shooting at a local range with various rifles and handguns. i have my AR-15 (with millet tactical scope) shooting dead on to 150yds. problem is at 200yds i cant see my bullet holes in the target (even with the neon targets). i am not a fan of shutting down the range every 3 shots to walk out and see my holes as i am sure this is rude to everyone else at the range. i need a spotting scope that will be good out to 3-400yds. i see lots available at all the guns shops in edmonton. i was wondering if anyone can reccomend a good one. last thing i want to do is screw around and get one that doesnt meet my needs. too many to choose from and i cannot find any comparisons on the internet. do i need to spend $600 to $1000? or are the $500 and under sufficient for my needs? help me please!!

Check out birding websites for optics advise. Birders are pretty fanatical about their optics and there is lots of good info on scopes on some of these sites. Optics quality vs. price is rising all the time. There is quite possibly some decent stuff out there around the 500 dollar mark now, but I am willing to bet you will be better served by a little higher priced scope. The Bushnell Elite series has always been pretty good value for the dollar spent. Vortex optics are also gaining a good reputation. I can't speak for their spotting scopes but I have two of their rifle scopes and they are very good quality for the price paid.

Well, I don't think you will have any success finding holes past 200m. You need big glass, and you need good glass and that comes with a hefty price. The other factor is the seeing conditions,, and you haven't any control over that.

Just purchased a Minox 62ED spotter with the 21-42 LER eyepiece from CameralandNY, one of our sponsors. Was a demo unit that worked out to be almost half price. Still cost me $800 delivered. Awesome scope and great customer service from Doug.

I have a Bushnell elite 80mm and I could see .308 bullet holes at 200 yards, even with pretty bad mirage in the summer. But at 300 or 400 yards I don't think you would be able to see bullet holes except with a 1000+ scope in ideal conditions.

I had a Bushnell Spacemaster 15x45x60, and I replaced it with a Leupy Sequoia, same size, thinking it would be better at the higher powers. Ummm...nope.

60mm objectives don't lend themselves to great clarity above 25x to 30x.

80mm definitely better way to go.

I get the sense that real spotting scopes start at about $800 or so, and the sky is the limit.

Cameraland! Site sponsor, unreal prces, good kit.

Pentax PF66 or PF80 has incredible quality. These guys had demo units at about half price. I have a background in reprographics and commercial photography. I am obsessive about optical quality.

Trust me: There is no such thing as a quality spotting scope for $500

Well price isn't always the same for everyone, some don't mind shelling a few grand while others Mastercard's can't quite take that. If you are out west take a look at the Nikon Spotter XL II, it comes with a 16-48x eyepiece for around $700. P&D Enterprises in Edmonton or any Wholesale Sports can help you out. If you are elsewhere drop me a PM and I can direct you to a local dealer to take a look through one.

I listed a Nikon Sky & Earth 15-45x60 (MINT) on EE a couple of days ago (under "Exchange of Optics and Sights"). I also have a Burris 15-45x60 (New) for sale there.
I don't know if that's what you're looking for but please let me know if you like one of them.
