Need A Load For 45-70

Need a load for Hornady 350grfp and H4198 for deer and blackbear, in the Hornady Sixth Edition it shows a start load at 37.1 to a max of 48.4 what would be a good starting point? What would be a estimated FPS one would be looking for? Thanks

A good starting load would be 37.1 grains unless you are a gambler..remember 50,000 psi 6 inches from your face. It's not worth cutting corners.

second what Johan22 said work your way up. there are 3 levels of loads for the 45-70 - minimum for the old trapdoors out there (this is what factory is loaded at), medium (for the newer ) marlin 1895s and high for the ruger single shots and Siamese mausers. do an internet search under 45-70 loads especially the powder company sites there is gobs of info out there.

I second this. Be careful with 45/70 loads - always start at the low end.

I load my 1897 marlin g/s with three hundred grain hollowpoint speers . with 65 grains of IMR 3031 . works good give it a try . Joe
